About the Department:

Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU through funding, promoting involvement, raising awareness, and supporting diverse student enrollment. DEA includes various offices such as the Senior Vice President's Office, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Marketing and Communications, and others.

SMU leverages its largest fundraising campaign to enhance academic quality and impact.

About the Position:

This is an on-campus, in-person role.

We seek a social media manager who can internalize SMU's brand voice, adapt to evolving trends, and manage content creation, social listening, analytics, community management, and contribute to organic and paid social strategies across campus platforms. The ideal candidate is an engaging storyteller, adept at creating platform-specific content for diverse audiences.

This role reports to the Associate Director of Social Media and supports SMU's marketing efforts aligned with the university's strategic plan.

Essential Functions:

  1. Conceptualize, create, and manage content across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, YouTube, and other media/websites, including shooting and editing videos, and assisting with paid social campaigns.
  2. Manage social communities by monitoring discussions and engaging appropriately. Assist during crises in coordination with media and relations teams.
  3. Utilize analytics insights to inform content strategies. Collaborate with marketing teams and campus units on innovative social media projects and campaigns targeting alumni, students, prospective students, parents, and influencers.
  4. Supervise undergraduate and graduate interns in content creation and management.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.
  6. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree required; Digital Media or Communications preferred. Minimum of two years managing social media channels and developing organic and paid strategies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong communication, relationship-building, writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to tailor content to platforms, analyze insights, and manage multiple priorities. Proficiency in shooting/editing photos and videos, with expertise in Adobe Photoshop and Premiere; After Effects experience is a plus. Graphic design skills are desirable.
