Job summary

Bear Valley Ski Resort is seeking a Snow Safety Coordinator to join our Ski Patrol team, focusing on on-mountain safety, avalanche mitigation, and weather monitoring. You will collaborate with ski patrol leadership to develop snow safety programs, supervise training, and support operational decisions in dynamic winter conditions at Bear Valley.

This role requires leadership experience, strong judgment, and the ability to work extended hours in cold weather, with responsibilities including

Qualifications

• 5+ years ski patrol at a Class A avalanche resort.
• EMT or OEC certification; Wilderness First Responder accepted with patient contact experience.
• CPR certification required.
• California blasters license or eligibility to obtain.
• Advanced snowmobile operation skills in varied terrain and snow conditions.
• Must pass federal/state background checks for explosives.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate avalanche forecasting, assessment, and mitigation efforts.
• Document the snow safety AM & PM meetings.
• Provide avalanche education/rescue/mitigation training for Ski Patrollers.
• Monitor weather and snowpack conditions.
• Assist in opening/closing procedures and on-mountain safety tasks.
• Maintain equipment and operate safely in extreme weather conditions.

The Snow Safety Coordinator is an integral member of our Ski Patrol team and part of a dedicated group of individuals committed to on mountain safety of all guests and employees. This role will actively collaborate with ski patrol leadership to develop and execute snow safety programs, monitor weather/snowpack conditions, and plan avalanche mitigation. The ideal candidate has professional experience within Class A avalanche resort mitigation, leadership experience, sound judgment, and the ability to perform in dynamic winter conditions. The Snow Safety coordinator supports the Director of Ski Patrol, Assistant Director of Ski Patrol, and Risk Manager with operational decision making and leadership as needed.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Collect and analyze weather and snowpack data
• Assist in coordinating avalanche forecasting, assessment, and mitigation efforts
• Document the snow safety AM & PM meetings.
• Provide avalanche education/rescue/mitigation training for Ski Patrollers under the direction of Ski Patrol Leadership
• Skiing to perform opening and closing procedures on the mountain daily
• Communication with other mountain operation departments
• Perform rope rescue skills and lift evacuations.
• Maintain clean, safe, and professional workstations
• Respond to medical emergencies
• Complete training records, explosive records, and AM/PM forms.
• Maintain any appropriate records as set forth by company policy and procedures
• Recognize and correct any slope safety hazards
• Shoveling snow, sometimes deep, heavy wet snow weighing more than 50 pounds per shovel full
• Heavy and awkward lifting of items up to 50 pounds plus
• Maintain resort boundary rope lines, padding, markings, and signage
• Willingness to work during extreme weather conditions

Skills and Competencies

• Minimum 5 years of ski patrol experience at a class A avalanche ski resort
• Current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC). Wilderness First Responder (WFR) accepted with patient contact experience
• CPR certification required
• Maintain a California blasters license or have eligibility to obtain
• Advanced snowmobile operation skills in a variety of terrain and snow conditions
• Must be able to pass federal and state background checks for the use and handling of explosives

Work Schedules

Weather, snow conditions and the number of guests play a large role in the work scheduling of Bear Valley employees.

When conditions are normal, you may be expected to work 40 up to 48 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. During busy periods – especially the holiday periods in December and the months of January and February – you may be expected to work six (6) days a week.

You must arrange for transportation to work so that you arrive at your designated workstation at the scheduled time. Keep in mind that you will often be required to drive on hilly, snowpacked, and icy road.

Working Conditions

At any time during the ski season, Bear Valley employees are often required to perform their tasks in high winds, heavy snowfalls, low visibility, rain, and extremely cold or warm temperatures.

Uniforms

A professional appearance at Bear Valley is required. Please wear your name tag and uniform at all times during your scheduled shift. We will provide most of the uniform for you to do your job. This uniform is for work hours ONLY, no exceptions.

You will be required to provide some items as part of your job.

The quality, color, and style of the items must be approved by your manager prior to being worn to work. All hats worn must have the Bear Valley logo while on shift.

The skiing/riding employee represents a model for safe skiing for both the guest and fellow employees. You are required to be aware of all safe skiing procedures, trail closures, and out-of-bounds policies of the mountain.
