Job description

Nova Biomedical is hiring a SMT Manufacturing Engineer on-site in our Waltham, MA facility to provide technical engineering support to Nova Biomedical's manufacturing of printed circuit boards utilizing surface mount technology (SMT) and through-hole technology (TH). This is a fully on-site opportunity in Waltham during the hours of 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Monday to Friday). The SMT Manufacturing Engineer will program, validate, and maintain in-house SMT equipment and continually improve board assembly processes and:

  • Provide technical manufacturing support to maintain a reliable supply of printed circuit board assemblies for the timely delivery of Nova products.
  • Use analytical and problem-solving capability to develop and standardize the SMT and TH processes.
  • Identify and implement preventive and corrective measures to continuously improve in-house production of quality printed circuit board assemblies.
  • Implement and maintain SMT and TH assembly production processes that meet or exceed IPC-A-610 standards, comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and current RoHS Directives.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates, optimizes, and maintains the SMT programs for the Pick & Place Machines, Solder Paste Printers, Automatic Optical Inspection Machine, Automatic Solder Paste Inspection Machine, and Reflow Ovens.
  • Continuously reviews and assesses the SMT Printed Circuit Assembly (PCA) production systems for improvements in efficiency, throughput, and quality. Utilizing and applying SMT machine performance criteria; this could include component attrition, nozzle data, feeder data and vision error information and use this information to drive improvements within the machine performance.
  • Review PCB designs for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to ensure compatibility with Bare Board house and Board Assembly house production requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and disposition of non-conforming materials related to board assembly production.
  • Provide analysis and resolutions to Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) for board assembly issues.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to enhance the skill level of, SMT Technicians, SMT Operators and Solder Technicians. Examples: machine set-up and operation, machine maintenance and repair, material storage and handling, ESD protection, soldering techniques, and equipment programming.
  • Ensure the SMT production equipment is maintained/calibrated properly: Develop a maintenance program and manage compliance. Implement and manage service contracts.
  • Document workflow routings and process times for Nova’s Printed Circuit Assemblies, and interface with Production management and Planning on SAP capacity planning.
  • Provide reports on spares usage during Maintenance periods or machine breakdowns to maintain spare-part stock levels and to highlight areas of concern or areas for machine improvement.
  • Diagnose and repair all departmental equipment down to PCB level and report findings in a concise and accurate manner. A good understanding of electrical drawings, schematics and engineering drawings is expected, together with the general use of multimeters, hand power tools and measuring equipment.
  • Write and perform Process Validation Protocols, Equipment Installation Qualifications (IQs) and Operation Qualifications (OQs).

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Must be proficient with computers/networking and general software such as MS Office.
  • Experience with SAP, Samsung/Hanwha, PARMI, BTU, KIC Profiler, Ekra/ASYS equipment and Visual Cam is a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Capable of performing critical business assessments and developing and executing project plans.
  • Self-motivated, seeks areas to improve production efficiencies and product quality.
  • This position requires attention to detail, training skills, and strong mechanical aptitude for programming, operating, and maintaining sophisticated automated machinery. Proficient with the utilization of IPC standards (e.g. IPC-A-610, IPC-J-STD001), and hands-on soldering skills are a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or comparable STEM. (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) degree.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates based on their years of advanced high-level hands-on SMT engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years SMT manufacturing engineering experience.
  • Must be proficient with computers/networking and general software such as MS Office.
  • Experience with SAP, Samsung/Hanwha, PARMI, BTU, KIC Profiler, Ekra/ASYS equipment and Visual Cam is a plus.
