Job summary

Prus Construction seeks a dependable Small Engine Mechanic to maintain and repair tools and equipment used by our heavy-civil crews. This role keeps equipment safe, reliable, and ready for use in the shop and on project sites, with responsibilities across diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and on-site support.

The successful candidate will have practical experience with gasoline and diesel engines, a strong mechanical mindset, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, service, and repair small gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Maintain equipment such as concrete saws, generators, pumps, and power tools.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems and test repairs.
  • Keep accurate service records and track parts and supplies.
  • Maintain a clean, safe shop and comply with safety policies.

Position Description

Prus Construction seeks a dependable and experienced Small Engine Mechanic to maintain and repair the tools and equipment used by our heavy-civil construction crews. This position is responsible for keeping equipment safe, reliable, and ready for use in the shop and on project sites.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, service, and repair small gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Maintain equipment such as concrete saws, generators, pumps, compactors, hand-held power tools, pressure washers, light towers, arrow boards, compressors, and other construction tools.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, tune-ups, inspections, and lubrication.
  • Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems.
  • Test repaired equipment to confirm safe and proper operation.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns in the shop and at local job sites.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Track parts and supplies and notify management when replacements are needed.
  • Keep the shop, tools, and work areas clean and organized.
  • Follow company safety policies and properly handle fuels, oils, batteries, and other materials.
  • Assist with other equipment and shop-related duties as needed.
  • Must have own tools and tool storage.
  • Employment Type: Full-time
  • Schedule: Day shift; occasional overtime or emergency repair work may be required

Position Requirements
What We Are Looking For

The successful candidate will be reliable, safety-minded, organized, and committed to quality workmanship. This person should understand the importance of minimizing equipment downtime and supporting construction crews in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications
  • Previous experience repairing small engines, construction equipment, landscaping equipment, or similar machinery is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems, and hydraulic components.
  • Ability to use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, parts diagrams, and service instructions.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair priorities.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in both shop and outdoor job-site conditions.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent mechanical experience..
