Job summary

About Duke University Hospital

Duke Hospital (Pediatric Sleep Lab) Durham, North Caorlina

Work Hours:

The training schedule for the first 90 days is:

Fridays 11 am-11:30 pm

Saturdays 6:30 pm-7 am

Sundays 6:30 pm-7 am

During this first 90 days you would work closely with a preceptor who will give you the hands on technical skills to complete a patient hook-up and basics of understanding the raw data that is collected during a sleep study.

After 90 days you would select what 3 nights you would like to work as a permanent schedule. You can choose to work all 3 shifts back-to-back (like Sunday/Monday/Tuesday) or split it up (like Sunday/ Wednesday/Thursday). At this point you should be able to do 2 patient hookups and run 2 sleep studies fairly independently. As long as you are a trainee, you will always be working with an RPSGT to help you make any clinical decisions. It is expected that you would sit for and pass the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists exam within 24 months (2 years) of hire, although you would be eligible to sit for the exam in a little under one year.

Duke shift differentials do apply to the trainee role and are applied to the entire shift. The shift premiums that would apply to your role are:

  • Monday-Friday 6:30 pm-7 am (3rd shift differential) is $1.50/hr added to base rate
  • Friday 11a-11:30p (2nd shift differential) is $1.10/hr added to base rate
  • Saturday/Sunday 6:30 pm- 7 am (3rd shift differential) is $2.70/hr added to base rate
Work Performed
  • Goals and expectations will be clearly defined at the initiation of the program per program guidelines.
  • Performs all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates service excellence towards patients, physicians, peers and other departments.
  • Assume responsibility for upholding the policies and procedure of the department and organization.
  • The specific nature of the apprenticeship will reflect the needs of the sponsoring organization, the learning goals of the student and the needs of the healthcare institution.
  • Through interactions with their clinical leader, apprentice's will receive mentorship and support to help their success on the engagement.
  • Program length is typically 12 to 18 months.
