Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic sleep testing procedures under direct supervision.

  • Attend didactic and clinical training components as required.

A Brief Overview:

Sleep technology is a high demand field with an importance that goes well beyond the screen of a monitor. Sleep technologists run the advanced diagnostics that keep patients breathing safely through the night, uncovering hidden sleep disorders before they turn into critical medical emergencies.. The Sleep Tech Trainee Program at University Hospitals is an AASM-accredited A-STEP Introductory program which offers a combination of classroom-based education, and hands on training, to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a Sleep Tech.



  • Placement assignments will vary, and occasional travel may be required through the UH system. Preferences for placement are considered but not guaranteed.

    • Placement locations include Cleveland Medical Center, Beachwood Medical Center, Elyria Medical Center St. John's Medical Center, Parma Medical Center, and Samaritan.



  • Shifts may vary; however most opportunities include a combination of Evenings and/or Nights.

    • Classroom training will occur during first shift, with evenings/nights requirements starting after the classroom portion of the training is complete.




What You Will Do

The Sleep Tech Trainee position is an entry level position for training in the performance of all routine and specialized sleep testing. A sleep trainee develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. The sleep trainee works under direct supervision of a polysomnography technologist. Trainee will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze data during recordings, and ensure information obtained is valid and interpretable. Trainee will become familiar with various equipment and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines. Trainee will learn to assess patient's status and identify each patient's requirements relative to their age specific needs. Trainee will demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior, develop proper communication skills within the healthcare environment, and pursue professional growth within the field. Trainee will participate in all didactic and clinical aspects of required sleep technologist training program.


Additional Responsibilities


  • Uses interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients/families, physicians, coworkers and other customers.

  • Complete supplemental didactic training as assigned.

  • Attends departmental staff and in-service meetings as required.

  • Learns to set up patients and perform sleep tests under supervision of an Polysomnography Technologist until deemed competent to perform tests independently by the Supervisor, and/or Manager.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

  • For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.


Education:


  • High School Equivalent / GED (Required)

  • Associate's Degree (Preferred)


Work Experience:


  • 1+ years direct patient care experience (Preferred)
