Qualifications

  • Familiarity with EMR or ability to learn and document in patient charts.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify needs.
  • Determine testing parameters in conjunction with physicians and protocols.
  • Review patient history and verify medical orders.
  • Follow sleep center protocols for sleep studies.
  • Evaluate sleep center equipment and inventory.
  • Demonstrate care across age groups (neonate to geriatric).
  • Adhere to AASM scoring parameters and report accuracy.
  • Document observations to facilitate scoring of polysomnographic results.
  • Prepare and upkeep sleep bedrooms and inventory of supplies.
  • Learn HSAT device operation, patient instructions, and infection control.

Position Statement

A sleep technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in‑center and out‑of‑center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A sleep technologist can perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet the patient‑specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history.
  • Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  • Review the patient’s history and verify the medical order.
  • Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.
  • Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for HSAT; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report.
  • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Is responsible for daily preparation and upkeep of sleep bedrooms including monthly inventory of supplies needed.
  • Will be trained on HSAT to include device operations, applications of sensors, use, maintenance, warnings and safety, instructions of patients’ regarding the use of the device, troubleshooting and infection control.
