Job summary

George Nice & Sons, a site developer based in Toano, VA, is seeking hands‑on Skilled Laborers to support earthwork and utility crews. You will use hand tools, assist with heavy equipment, and help maintain site safety while contributing to building pads and utility installations.

Responsibilities

• Clear debris, dig trenches, backfill holes, and grade terrain.
• Lifts and carries materials, tools, and supplies as needed.
• Ensure tools and work areas are clean and organized.
• Mixes and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, or other materials by hand.
• Operate trench rollers or vibratory rollers for soil compaction where needed.
• Assist with pipe assembly and installation of infrastructure components.
• Grade dirt using available tools and equipment.

At George Nice & Sons, our expertise lies in moving dirt, road work, creating building pads, and installing utilities such as water mains, storm drains, sewers, and manholes.

Skilled Laborer

Based on division placement, the mission is to support earthwork and utility crews. You will assist crew members to uphold safety standards, utilizing hand tools, as well as some exposure to heavy equipment such as off‑road dump trucks and rollers. Keep each site clean and communicate effectively with the team.

Requirements

• Must have the ability to function well in a team environment.

• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, lift heavy materials, and stand for long periods of time.

Description of Duties

• Clearing debris, digging trenches, backfilling holes, compacting soil, and grading terrain.
• Lifts and carries materials, tools, and supplies as needed.
• Ensures that the proper tools for the day are on the trucks; clean tools, materials, and work areas.
• Mixes, pours and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other material using hand tools.
• Use of trench rollers, or smooth drum rollers, and/or vibratory rollers for soil compaction.
• Pipe assembly, pipe cutting, and rigging to assist with installation of various infrastructure components.
• Use of various tools to grade dirt.

Position Type: Full time

Hourly Position: Based on competency and skill level.
