Job summary

George Nice & Sons is seeking a skilled heavy equipment operator to join our Virginia team. You will dig trenches, lay utilities, and operate loaders, backhoes, dozers, excavators, skid steers, and bobcats to support construction projects between Hampton Roads and Richmond.

A minimum of 3+ years on heavy equipment is required, along with a valid driver’s license and the ability to work Monday through Saturday. Drug screening is part of the recruitment process.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years’ experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Experience with trench work and utility installation.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Able to work Monday - Saturday.
  • Must be able to pass drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Dig trenches to the proper depth/grade with safety slopes or protection.
  • Backfill holes and compact earth for construction.
  • Avoid hazards and obstructions such as utilities, other workers, and falling objects.
  • Place water, storm and sanitary sewer pipes in excavations.
  • Familiarize with digging plans, machine capabilities, and safe procedures.
  • Observe hand signals and markings to operate machines per specifications.
  • Safely operate machines and perform minor maintenance.
  • Assist in placing, moving and dismantling signs, barricades and traffic control devices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Major Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Dig trenches and ensures the trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade with proper safety sloping or protection.
  • Backfill holes, or compact earth to prepare for construction.
  • Avoid potential hazards and obstructions such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects.
  • Responsible for placement of water, storm & sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
  • Become familiar with digging plans, machine capabilities and limitations, and with efficient and safe digging procedures in a given application.
  • Observe hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings when operating machines so that work can be performed to specifications.
  • Safely operates machines, performs minor maintenance and up-keep of equipment.
  • Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ operating heavy equipment.
  • Related work experience with trench work and installation of utilities such as storm drains, sewer mains etc.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Requires extensive physical ability.
  • Able to work Monday - Saturday.
