Job summary

Sun-Valley-Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho seeks a Ski Patrol Supervisor to lead the Ski Patrol team, guide daily operations, and ensure guest and employee safety across the mountain.

You will train patrollers, assign work, oversee avalanche control and emergency response, and coordinate lift evacuations and rescue operations in partnership with mountain operations.

This is a full-time, on-site role requiring leadership, calm judgment, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) or EMT-1 certification and CPR.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Valid U.S. Driver's License.
• Ability to pass required Ski Patrol ski test.
• Experience leading or supervising Ski Patrol staff.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergencies.
• Experience with avalanche control and rescue operations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and variable hours.
• Physical ability to perform demanding rescue tasks and lift up to 75 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a liaison between Ski Patrol management and Ski Patrollers, providing daily guidance, direction, and support.
• Prepare daily work assignments and coordinate patrol activities to support operational priorities.
• Lead and participate in regular Ski Patrol meetings focused on team performance, goals, training, and department objectives.
• Support hiring, onboarding, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of Ski Patrollers.
• Mentor new Patrollers and provide coaching to support their development from new hire to competent Patroller.
• Patrol assigned mountain areas to identify injured guests, rule violations, hazards, and potential safety concerns; provide first aid and coordinate emergency response as needed.
• Establish, maintain, open, and close ski area boundaries and terrain based on snow, weather, avalanche, and other safety conditions.
• Operate snowmobiles to support mountain opening procedures and transport personnel, guests, and equipment.
• Participate in avalanche mitigation using Class A explosives and/or Avalauncher; monitor avalanche terrain, assess conditions, and take appropriate action to mitigate hazards or close terrain.
• Operate and maintain toboggans and related rescue equipment to safely transport injured guests and personnel, including the use of belay systems when required.
• Participate in helicopter medical evacuations, Search and Rescue operations, lift evacuations, and other emergency response activities.
• Climb lift towers and maintain proficiency in lift evacuation procedures; assist with training and conducting lift evacuations.
• Support mountain maintenance and other operational activities as needed to maintain safe and accessible terrain.
• Maintain required documentation, training records, and incident information in accordance with department and regulatory requirements.
• Follow OSHA, blood-borne pathogen, emergency response, and other applicable safety standards and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned or necessary to safeguard Resort guests and employees.

Description

The Ski Patrol Supervisor supports the daily leadership and operation of the Ski Patrol team, providing guidance, training, and direction to Ski Patrollers while helping ensure the safety of guests and employees across the mountain. This position serves as a liaison between Ski Patrol management and staff and is responsible for supporting emergency response, mountain safety, avalanche mitigation, lift evacuations, and ski area operations. The ideal candidate is an experienced patroller and leader with strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.

• Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and make effective decisions in high-pressure or emergency situations.
• Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills with the ability to work independently.
• Working knowledge of OSHA standards, blood-borne pathogens, and applicable safety practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related computer systems.
• Familiarity with conflict management and de-escalation techniques preferred.
• Ability to work outdoors in changing alpine weather conditions and perform physically demanding rescue and mountain operations.
• Ability to climb lift towers, operate snowmobiles, ski/ride challenging terrain, and safely transport injured guests.
• Strong visual acuity, including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Ability to ski advanced terrain while carrying equipment; Snowboarders not accepted.
• Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, evenings, and other variable hours as required by mountain operations.
• Engage in physical activities like standing for long periods, walking, and utilizing hands for tasks that involve gripping, handling, and reaching.
• Can safely lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
