Job description

Lead field operations on bridge, dam, concrete, utility, excavation, and public infrastructure projects throughout New Hampshire and Maine.

Our client is a prime civil contractor based in the Portsmouth, NH region. They have been in business for over 20 years and specialize in heavy civil construction, including bridges, dam rehabilitation, utilities, concrete, excavation, and complex infrastructure work. They are a small, tight-knit company with fewer than 20 employees, which means each person’s contribution has a real impact.

This position is ideal for someone who has worked in the field, knows how to get projects completed and wants more ownership than they may currently have at a larger company. We are looking for a hands-on field leader who can read the plans, understand the work, direct the crew, coordinate with the project team, and help drive production safely and efficiently.

Position Overview

The Site Superintendent is responsible for running the job in the field. This includes planning and coordinating daily work, leading crews and subcontractors, communicating with project managers and inspectors, tracking job progress, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring the work is completed according to the plans and specifications.

This is not a desk-only superintendent role. The right candidate must be comfortable being directly involved in the work, including layout, equipment operation, problem solving, crew direction, documentation, and day-to-day field execution.

Responsibilities
  • Lead daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects in New Hampshire and Maine.
  • Supervise and direct field crews, operators, laborers, subcontractors, vendors, and deliveries.
  • Read, interpret, and execute work from plans, specifications, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Perform and/or assist with layout, grade checking, and field measurements.
  • Operate equipment when needed, especially excavators.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, engineers, owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Plan daily and weekly work activities to maintain productivity and keep projects moving.
  • Track labor, equipment, materials, production, and job progress.
  • Understand project budgets, production expectations, and cost impacts in the field.
  • Identify field issues early and communicate solutions to the project team.
  • Maintain high standards for safety, workmanship, quality, and professionalism.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and ensure site visitors are informed of jobsite safety requirements.
  • Complete daily reports, timecards, work logs, equipment inspections, and other field documentation.
  • Use field management software such as Raken, QuickBooks Time / TSheets, Tenna, or similar systems.
  • Provide hands-on training and direction to laborers, operators, and other field personnel.
  • Ensure company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and project-specific safety procedures are followed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Foreman, Superintendent, or similar field leadership role.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating excavators or other heavy equipment.
  • Experience in heavy civil construction, excavation, utilities, bridges, dams, concrete, sitework, or similar work.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, plans, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Ability to take a project from plans to actual field execution.
  • Experience leading small crews and coordinating subcontractors.
  • Strong understanding of production, scheduling, job costs, and field logistics.
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Positive, professional, team-first attitude.
  • Attention to detail and a strong drive for quality work.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to travel to job sites throughout New Hampshire and Maine.
  • Ability to work year-round in all seasons.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting at least 50 pounds, climbing ladders, standing for extended periods, bending, crouching, kneeling, and safely accessing jobsite areas.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Pay: $90,000 - $120,000 per year, based on experience
  • Company truck or truck allowance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off and Holidays
