Job description

Company Description

MarketAxess is on a journey to digitally transform one of the world’s largest financial markets, enabling the shift from analog, phone-based trading to a fully electronic marketplace. Why does this matter? Because our platform makes trading fixed-income more accessible, ultimately improving transparency, efficiency, and competition in the marketplace. Changing the way an established industry transacts is no easy feat. There will be twists and turns, because no one’s ever done this before. But now, more than 2,000 clients around the world rely on our solutions, and that number is only expected to grow in the years ahead. We know where we’re going. How we get there is up to us. Join us and help Take Us There.

The Role

We are seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to join a team responsible for the production and non-production environments supporting multiple in‑house trading systems. This includes:

  • A distributed algorithmic trading platform hosted for our white‑label clients.
  • A next‑generation sequencer‑architecture trading platform powering the NYSE and forming the foundation for the modernized core trading system at MarketAxess.
  • Web‑based trading and other user interface applications

In this role, you will become a deep technical expert on these platforms‑owning reliability, stability, and performance across complex, latency‑sensitive systems. You’ll help drive modernization efforts, strengthen SRE practices, partner with internal trading desks and engineering teams, and work directly with clients and external partners. We value curiosity, ownership, and a passion for understanding system internals. You should be excited to dive into distributed systems, low‑latency trading environments, production observability, and automation. We foster a culture of collaboration, experimentation, and continuous learning. Diverse perspectives and people who challenge the status quo are welcome and encouraged.

How You’ll Help Take Us There
Platform Reliability & Operations
  • Own the reliable operation of our algorithmic trading and sequencer‑based trading platforms in production and UAT.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve trading issues in partnership with the trade desk support team.
  • Diagnose complex production issues involving internal services, market centers, network paths, and external software vendors.
  • Perform release and configuration management across environments, including binary deployments and coordinated infrastructure changes.
  • Help define, implement, and evangelize SRE best practices across the team.
  • Build a culture of automation, eliminating manual toil through robust scripting, tooling, and workflow re‑design.
  • Conduct incident analytics and drive proactive detection, prevention, and capacity improvements.
  • Lead regular reviews of system performance, stability, and operational metrics with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to onboarding activities including client onboarding, FIX certifications, and API documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal developers, QA, infrastructure, and product teams to develop technical solutions exceeding client expectations.
  • Enhance system observability through improvements in monitoring, alerting, and logging across all environments.
  • Conduct system performance analysis testing including construction of test harnesses
Team Collaboration & Technical Leadership
  • Mentor peers and junior engineers, sharing knowledge of systems, tooling, and reliability engineering.
  • Engage in internal and external technical communities, staying up to date on technology trends and industry practices.
  • Incorporate feedback from internal users and stakeholders into the roadmap – collaborating to the overall direction of the results.
What We’re Looking for
  • Strong programming experience in Java and/or Python.
  • Proficiency with shell scripting (bash, ksh).
  • Understanding of JVM‑based distributed applications and experience across Linux systems.
  • Solid knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins or similar).
  • Knowledge of FIX protocol, FIX connectivity workflows, and onboarding processes.
  • Understanding of market data, exchange protocols, messaging middleware, and data distribution.
  • Experience working with containerized applications.
  • Experience with AWS services.
  • Experience with monitoring/observability tools and associated best practices.
  • Deep commitment to automation of the entire SDLC.
  • Ability to leverage GenAI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or equivalent) to accelerate development and improve code quality.
  • Applying AI‑driven practices such as prompt engineering and AI‑assisted code reviews to boost productivity and reduce delivery time while mitigating risks.
  • Knowledgeable in electronic trading, including equities and FX.
  • Understanding of trading lifecycles, ECNs, dark pools, equity market structure, and fixed income trading protocols (Spot FX a plus).
  • Exceptional analytical, problem‑solving, and incident‑resolution skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to remain calm and effective in high‑pressure trading environments.
  • Collaborative, personable, and skilled at working across cross‑functional teams.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong organizational and project execution abilities.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
