Job summary

The City of Memphis is seeking a Paramedic to work under supervision of a fire station Lieutenant and an on‑duty EMS Lieutenant. You will interact with patients and bystanders, gather medical information, and administer care using established protocols.

Responsibilities include determining transport needs, communicating with hospital personnel, loading patients, and maintaining ambulance readiness. Must be licensed as a Paramedic in Tennessee and meet all credential requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must hold Paramedic National Registry Certification and maintain Tennessee licensure.
  • Must be record-free of felonies or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude and pass background checks.

Job Summary

Works under an assigned fire station Lieutenant and on‑duty Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Lieutenant. Interacts with patients and bystanders to gather medical information and administer care. Uses protocols to decide if ambulance or wing transport is required, communicates with hospital personnel, and manages equipment and vehicle operations. Assists during emergency calls and maintains readiness of ambulance equipment.

Typical Physical Demands

Assists other firefighters in lifting and carrying a victim and stretcher weighing an average 220–240 pounds (150‑180 pound victim and 60‑pound stretcher). Requires walking, running, standing, lifting, climbing, stooping, etc.

Typical Working Conditions

Works from an assigned fire station to perform paramedic duties in emergency vehicles such as ambulances at emergency scenes. Must be able to work an eight‑hour shift (40‑hour week) or a twelve‑hour shift (up to 42‑hour week). May be exposed to contagious infections, diseases, extreme weather, and stressful or dangerous public interactions.

Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent. Minimum age 19 years and maximum age 50 years at hire. Currently licensed as a Paramedic by any state and eligible for reciprocity in Tennessee. Must hold or have held Paramedic National Registry Certification and maintain licensure per Tennessee Emergency Medical Act. Must be record‑free of felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude and pass background investigation. May need to pass a comprehensive medical examination and physical ability test (excluding CPAT). Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with Endorsement F.
