Job summary

Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County seeks a paramedic with Tennessee licensure to provide high-quality EMS care in the Nashville area. The role includes responding to emergencies, assessing patients, delivering ALS care, driving ambulances when needed, and maintaining equipment.

Required are a high school diploma, TN Paramedic license, ACLS, and BLTS or PHTLS within six months. Must be at least 21 years old and able to work in a dynamic, high-stakes environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Paramedic license issued by the State of Tennessee.
  • ACLS certification.
  • Basic Trauma Life Support (BLTS) or Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) within 6 months of employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to incidents requiring emergency medical care.
  • Determine the nature and extent of injury or illness.
  • Establish priority for required emergency care per regulations.
  • Render advanced emergency medical care.
  • Lift and move patients for treatment and transport to facilities.
  • Operate emergency medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Record patient information.
  • Establish radio communications with hospital staff or online medical control.
  • Drive ambulance as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure equipment is functional.
  • Keep vehicle clean and in good operating condition.
  • Participate in ongoing training to improve knowledge and skills.

Job description

This position is located with the Nashville Fire Department (NFD) and provides efficient and specialized emergency medical care to the sick, injured, and/or critically ill when required, and during transportation to medical facilities. Performs related duties as required.

  • Responds to incidents requiring emergency medical care.
  • Determines the nature and extent of the injury or illness.
  • Establishes priority for required emergency care as outlined in state regulations.
  • Renders advanced emergency care.
  • Lifts and moves patients as necessary for treatment and transportation to medical facilities.
  • Operates emergency medical apparatus and equipment.
  • Records patient information.
  • Establishes radio communications with hospital emergency department personnel or on-line medical control
  • Drives ambulance as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures equipment is working properly.
  • Keeps vehicle clean and in efficient operating condition.
  • Participates in on-going training to improve knowledge and skills.

High School Diploma or equivalent and a State of Tennessee Paramedic License.

Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Medical Standards.

Must be twenty one (21) years of age.

LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid Driver License
  • Licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Paramedic
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Certification in Basic Trauma Life Support (BLTS) or Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)(within the first six (6) months of employment).

FAILURE TO MAINTAIN LICENSE OR CERTIFICATIONS WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Tennessee Department of Health, EMS Division
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency medical care
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced medical procedures and specialized ambulance equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency medical treatment techniques
  • Knowledge of local streets, and hospital locations
  • Knowledge of emergency communications codes and procedures
  • Skill in driving an emergency vehicle
  • Ability to operate all emergency medical and related equipment
  • Ability to diagnose injuries and apply proper medical treatment
  • Ability to serve in a lead/senior capacity over work activities
  • Ability to make quick accurate decisions concerning human life
  • Ability to perform demanding physical tasks involved in providing emergency medical care
  • Ability to use emergency medical and rescue equipment; including two-way radios
