Job summary

Santa Fe County NM is seeking a Traffic Sign Technician to design, fabricate, install, and inspect regulatory signs in accordance with MUTCD guidelines. You will coordinate installations, operate fabrication equipment, and maintain signs and markings across county roads.

The role requires certifications in traffic control and work zone safety, plus a valid NM driver's license. Expect fieldwork in varying weather and the potential for evening hours and equipment operation responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of sign maintenance/operations experience.
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification within six months of hire.
  • IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Technician and Signs and Markings Level I certification within one year of hire.
  • OSHA and First Aid, CPR and AED certifications or to obtain within six months (training provided).
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, cuts, lays out and installs signs per MUTCD; prepares materials and surfaces for fabrication and installation.
  • Operates fabrication tools and maintains equipment; ensures safe operation of tools.
  • Inspects signs and road markings for visibility; sets up work zones and performs traffic control/flagging.
  • Collects GPS data of traffic devices and inputs into tracking systems.
  • Orders and inventories supplies; maintains daily work logs.
  • Delegates work to and/or trains subordinate staff.
  • Assists field investigations to support traffic analysis, permit review and inspections.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and promotes safety practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned.

Job description

Primary Purpose

Installs, inspects, fabricates and repairs various signs according to established policies, procedures, blueprints, plans and specifications and in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Delegates work to and/or trains subordinate staff as needed.

Essential Job Functions
  • Designs, cuts, lays out and installs signs per the MUTCD guidelines; prepares materials and surfaces for fabrication and repair of signs; prepares locations for installation by cutting or trimming trees as needed; installs sign poles for new signs.
  • Operates fabrication machine, power and hand tools; maintains and repairs tools and equipment; ensures the safe operation of all equipment and tools.
  • Inspects signs and road markings to ensure proper visibility; applies pavement markings in accordance with MUTCD and maintains existing paving markings, i.e., crosswalks, railroad crossings, and school crossings. Sets up work zones and performs traffic control and flagging.
  • Collects and inputs GPS data of all Santa Fe County Traffic related devices to include signs, pavement markings, street lighting, etc.
  • Orders and inventories supplies and materials; and maintains daily work logs.
  • Delegates work to and/or trains subordinate staff.
  • Assists other traffic staff in performing field investigations to support traffic analysis, traffic studies, permit review and construction inspections.
  • Ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned.
Knowledge / Skills
  • Working knowledge of basic math; of sign design and layout; of the materials and equipment used in the manufacturing of signs, of hazards and safety precautions and practices; of procedures and practices applied in inspecting, installing, repairing, and fabricating traffic signs; of the methods, equipment and materials used in painting, marking and striping of County streets; and of the operation and maintenance of the paint/striping machine.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize work; to present information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • Ability to use Flexi Sign Making Software, ArcGIS Collector, and Lucity Work order system.
  • To install, repair and fabricate traffic signs; to read and interpret maps with sign designations; and to operate hydraulic post drivers, hydraulic anchor pullers, generators, hammer drills, power drills, power impact drills, grinders, wrenches, hammers, sledgehammers, shovels, fence post drivers, levels, forklifts, paint stripping machines, propane torches and other various power and manual tools and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of formal training or experience in sign maintenance and operations or related maintenance experience totaling two (2) years.
  • Obtain and maintain ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification within six (6) months of date of hire.
  • Obtain and maintain IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Technician and Signs and Markings Level I certification within one (1) year of date of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain OSHA and First Aid, CPR and AED certifications or obtain within six (6) months of hire (training provided by Santa Fe County).
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license. Incumbent may be appointed to drive a Santa Fe County vehicle while conducting County business.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions

Work is performed in both a shop setting and outdoors with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, allergens, chemicals, electrical energy and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near hazardous/moving materials, equipment and machinery; exposure to excessive noise; and working with hostile and/or offensive individuals. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required. Work requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Work schedule may include evening and weekend hours. Position will be subject to random drug screening, per DOT regulation.

Conditions Of Employment

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain certifications required.
