Job summary

Pacific Union School District in Arcata, CA seeks a Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication between deaf or hard of hearing students and teachers, staff and peers. The interpreter will translate from spoken English to sign language and back to voice in classrooms and events, supporting curriculum access and participation.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of an interpreter training program, and RID/EIPA or equivalent certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited interpreter training program.
  • RID/EIPA certification or equivalent preferred (dependent on state/district requirements).
  • Experience in an educational setting is desirable.
  • Background check and TB test clearance as applicable.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Qualifications

The Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and others within the educational environment, including teachers, staff, and peers. Using American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other appropriate sign systems, the interpreter provides accurate and impartial interpretation of spoken, written and signed communication. This role supports student access to curriculum and school participation and ensures compliance with educational laws and accessibility standards. Under the general supervision of the Administration/Director of Special Education, serve as the facilitator of communication between students, teachers and others; interpret from spoken and written English to sign language for DHH individuals and sign language to voice for English speakers. Sign language interpretation can occur in a variety of settings including classroom instruction, and other school related activities including school events and meetings.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Completion of an accredited interpreter training program;
  • Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Educational Interpreter PerformanceAssessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, or equivalent certification preferred (dependent on state/district requirements);
  • Experience working in an educational setting is desirable;
  • Clearance of background check and TB test (if applicable per district policy);
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid;
  • Meet the psychical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties effectively.
