Job summary

Independent School District 15 seeks a dedicated paraeducator to support students at St. Francis Elementary School (K-5). You will provide defined supports per Individualized Education Plans under a special education teacher, and complete required PCA training before orientation.

Regular hours are 7 hours per day, Monday through Friday on student contact days, with 1020+ hours annually. The role includes professional development and collaboration with staff to enhance learning outcomes.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; coursework in child development is preferred.
  • Must have completed the interpreter training program.
  • Must be PCA certified; location will provide certification info.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children.
  • Two years of higher education (60 credits) or an associate degree or paraeducator training before start date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide students with supports from IEPs under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Complete PCA training before New Hire Orientation.
  • Complete 8 hours of paid professional development.
  • Collect data on student progress in general or special education.
  • Partner with teachers and administrators to create a supportive learning environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development throughout the year.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) is required. Additional coursework in child development and/or experience in working with children is preferred
  • Must have completed the interpreter training program
  • Must be P.C.A. (Personal Care Assistant) certified; will provide information on where to take it, if you do not already have this certification
  • Effective communication skills, good interpersonal skills with adults and children
  • Obtain Highly Qualified status: Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 college credits), an Associate degree(or higher)or successful completion of the Paraeducator training and assessments before your start date.
Training and Experience Requirements
  • Basic sign language skills required. Completion of ASL Level III coursework preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years successful experience working with adolescents, and/or individuals with special needs. Other successful work experience canbe considered
Job Duties
  • Provide students with defined supports from their Individualized Education Plans under the direction of the special education teacher.

Functional Class Responsibilities
  • Ensures communication access via sign language and augmentative communication tools.
  • Ability to expand functional Sign Language vocabulary and utilize basic sign expansion strategies when specific vocabulary is unknown.
  • Demonstrates competency of expressive use of Sign Language for dialogues and short sentences, narratives and/or stories utilizing important ASL grammatical features.
Positions 1,020 hours or more per year are benefit eligible
