Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:15 AM-3:15 PM

Position Summary

The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter provides interpreting services for a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The interpreter facilitates effective communication between the student, teachers, staff, and peers throughout the school day while supporting the student's access to instruction and participation in the school environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide accurate and clear ASL interpretation during classroom instruction, discussions, activities, assemblies, meetings, and other school-related events.
  • Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, staff, classmates, and other school personnel.
  • Interpret both spoken English to ASL and ASL to spoken English as appropriate.
  • Support the student's full participation in academic, social, and extracurricular activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and educational records.
  • Collaborate professionally with teachers, special education staff, administrators, and related service providers.
  • Follow the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and school procedures.
  • Adapt interpreting techniques to meet the student's individual communication needs and developmental level.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and serve as a communication facilitator rather than an instructor or advocate unless otherwise directed by the educational team.
  • Participate in school meetings or student support meetings when interpreting services are needed.
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, and supportive presence within the school environment.
  • Log services for medicaid billing.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • EIPA score of 3.5 or higher (minimum Idaho requirement) or RID certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and effective interpretation in an educational setting.
  • Experience interpreting in an elementary school and working with children or adolescents who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development, educational terminology, IEPs, and special education environments.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with teachers, families, and school-based teams.
  • Understanding of confidentiality requirements, including FERPA, and IEP implementation.

Work Requirements
  • Ability to reliably commute to the assigned campus.
  • Ability to supervise students in classrooms and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school day.
Schedule
  • Monday-Thursday
  • 8:15 AM-3:15 PM
  • Approximately 28 hours per week
  • Follows the school calendar and schedule
Compensation

Pay: $25 per hour

Benefits

Employees working 20 hours or more per week are eligible for participation in the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho (PERSI).
