Job summary

The City of Alexandria seeks a Sign and Marking Specialist, Traffic, to install, replace, and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings across the city. The role involves operating equipment, coordinating traffic control during events, and ensuring safety for visitors and residents.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Louisiana driver’s license, with IMSA Work Zone Safety and Signs and Marking Level I certifications expected within stated timeframes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in street maintenance preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and obtain/maintain Louisiana driver licenses as required.
• Must obtain and maintain IMSA Work Zone Safety certification within six months and Signs and Marking Level I certification within one year.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical tasks to install, replace, and maintain all traffic signs and markings within the City; paints and marks parking lots, curbs, and crosswalks; clears signs visibility obstructions.
• Ensures signs and closings comply with MUTCD guidelines; coordinates with DOTD, APD, and Parish officials for traffic control.
• Maintains inventory of signs; orders replacement stock; installs traffic counters; prepares work orders and estimates; operates vehicle and equipment safely.

Annual Salary Range: $31,767.06 - $38,120.47 Grade: 18

The City of Alexandria is seeking professional individuals to begin a career in the Traffic Department, located in the heart of Central Louisiana, to perform technical tasks to install, replace, and maintain all traffic signs and markings for the Traffic Department of the City of Alexandria. Work is performed under the supervision of the Superintendent, Traffic, and positions are subject to 24 hour call out, seven days a week.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs technical tasks to install, replace, and maintain all traffic signs and markings within the City; paints and marks parking lots, curbs, and crosswalks; cuts limbs and shrubs blocking the view of street signs. Assists with the set-up of barricades, detours, and related traffic control at special events; assists in closing streets, maintaining cones and barricades, and performing related tasks to ensure visitors’ safety.
• Ensures signs and closings comply with required guidelines and regulations according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); works with other city departments and assists DOTD, APD, and Parish officials with traffic control measures.
• Maintains inventory of signs; orders replacement stock as needed; installs traffic counters and tabulates data; prepares work orders for signs; prepares estimates of materials needed. Utilizes tools and equipment to cut and press non-stock signs; hangs banners and flags using a bucket truck. Inspects and maintains vehicles, operates safely, performs routine maintenance tasks, and makes recommendations for major repairs or replacement as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in street maintenance, with installation of traffic signs, pavement markings, and related duties preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver’s license within one (1) month of hire. Must obtain and maintain IMSA Work Zone Safety certification within six (6) months of hire and Signs and Marking Level I certification within one year of hire.

Work Schedule:

40 hours per week; Subject to 24-hour call and weekends.
