Job summary

The City of West Monroe is seeking a diligent Maintenance Worker to assist with the installation, maintenance, and inventory of traffic signs, traffic control devices, and related city infrastructure. You will perform field duties including road striping, vegetation removal, and general maintenance tasks in support of city operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with inspection, maintenance, and adjustment of traffic signals and related equipment.

• Trim limbs and vegetation obstructing signs and signals.
• Operate hand and power tools and equipment needed for duties.
• Assist with bucket truck operations for maintenance of signals, signs, banners, and related equipment.
• Set up and remove traffic control devices for City work activities.
• Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe condition.

Job Overview

Under general supervision, assists with the installation, maintenance, and inventory of traffic signs, traffic control devices, and related City infrastructure. Performs a variety of field duties including road striping, vegetation removal, and other maintenance activities.

Specific Tasks, Duties, & Responsibilities

• Assist with the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of street signs and traffic control devices.
• Maintain and assist with inventory and distribution of traffic signs, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
• Assist with the inspection, maintenance, and adjustment of traffic signals and related equipment.
• Assist with road and pavement striping activities.
• Trim limbs, brush, and vegetation that obstruct street signs, traffic signals, or visibility.
• Operate hand and power tools, including shovels, rakes, drills, saws, pressure washers, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Assist with bucket truck operations for the maintenance of traffic signals, signs, banners, and related equipment.
• Mix and apply herbicides and other chemicals in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• Assist with grounds and maintenance work at Hasley Cemetery as assigned.
• Set up and remove traffic control devices to support City work activities.
• Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Worker Requirements

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Louisiana driver's license.
• Previous experience with signs, traffic control, construction, landscaping, or general maintenance preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in assigned work.
• Ability to learn basic traffic sign, traffic control, and traffic signal maintenance practices.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to safely mix and apply herbicides and other chemicals used in assigned work.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a crew and independently when directed.
• Ability to follow established safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
• Ability to work around moving traffic, vehicles, equipment, chemicals, noise, and other field-related hazards while using required protective equipment.
• Ability to work at elevated heights when performing duties from a bucket truck or similar equipment.

Hours/Scheduling

• Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• May be required to respond to emergency or after-hours calls as needed.
• Overtime or schedule adjustments may be required based on operational needs.
