Job summary

Nucor Corporation is seeking a Shredder Maintenance Supervisor for the second shift in its Metal Recycling Services division. This role leads the shredding operation, oversees maintenance of the shredder and related equipment, and coordinates with other shifts to ensure safe, efficient production.

The position emphasizes safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement in a large steel and recycling environment, with opportunities for growth and professional development.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, engineering, or 3+ years of manufacturing management experience.
  • Experience in operations or manufacturing with heavy equipment.
  • Experience in scrap metal handling.
  • Experience in maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in plant safety and operations on a day-to-day basis.
  • Establish production work schedules and lead in long-range planning.
  • Hire, train, develop and coach staff; support employee growth.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on maintenance parts, scheduling and needs.
  • Demonstrate a hands-on leadership style with a strong safety culture.

Basic Job Functions

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times. The Shredder Maintenance Supervisor has direct responsibility for second shift operations of the shredding department, including but not limited to, operations of the shredder, maintenance of the shredder, mobile equipment, and other processing equipment. They lead a team of operators and maintenance personnel, ensuring safe work practices are followed and that the shredder, downstream processing equipment, and material handling systems are running efficiently. They also coordinate with the Day Shift Shredder Supervisor, the Facility Manager, and other supervisors on ordering parts, maintenance scheduling, and other maintenance needs.   • Provide leadership in plant safety and operations on a day-to‑day basis.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with customers.
  • Establish production work schedules.
  • Provide leadership in people development activities such as hiring, training, developing and coaching staff.
  • Serve as a role model; support and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental policies and practices.
  • Support manager in long‑range planning and budgeting.
  • Conduct monthly inventory.
  • Hands‑on leadership approach in working with teammates.
  • Safety oriented.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, engineering or related field or a minimum of 3 years management experience in heavy industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Experience in operations or manufacturing with heavy equipment
  • Experience in scrap metal
  • Experience in the maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of inventory management, shipping and receiving material using lean manufacturing principles is a plus
  • Proven ability to communicate with all levels of customers and internal contacts
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Skilled and experienced with personal computers, software, spreadsheets and databases (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to plan, manage and prioritize work; adapt to a changing environment; strong organized approach to work
  • Knowledge and experience in mechanical and electrical maintenance and engineering fundamentals
  • Experience in developing effective preventative/predictive maintenance program
