As the team grows, the Shop Manager will transition into a more traditional supervisory/managerial role, focusing on high-level oversight and team leadership. Prior experience in managing an automotive or truck repair shop is highly preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Operational Leadership:Oversee the day-to-day operations of the truck repair shop, ensuring an efficient, safe, and productive work environment. Manage workflow and scheduling for repair jobs to maximize shop productivity and minimize vehicle downtime.
  • Team Supervision:Supervise a team of diesel technicians and support staff – including hiring, training, and coaching employees. Assign work to mechanics/technicians based on skill and capacity, and provide guidance or assistance with troubleshooting when needed. Promote a culture of safety, quality, and teamwork.
  • Parts & Inventory Management:Manage the shop’s parts inventory and tools. Oversee ordering of parts and supplies, maintain relationships with vendors, and ensure critical parts are in stock to prevent repair delays. Implement inventory control practices to balance availability with cost-efficiency.
  • Vendor Management:Liaise with external vendors and service providers (parts suppliers, equipment maintenance, etc.). Negotiate pricing and service agreements that benefit the shop’s operations. Ensure timely payment and resolution of any supply issues.
  • Budgeting & Reporting:Oversee the shop’s budget and financial performance. Monitor expenses, labor costs, and revenues from repair orders. Prepare or review reports on shop performance (e.g. weekly productivity, parts usage, and costs) and work with senior management to meet financial targets.
  • Quality Control & Compliance:Implement and enforce quality standards for all repair and maintenance work. Conduct final inspections or audits of completed jobs to ensure work meets safety regulations and company standards. Ensure compliance with all relevant safety and environmental regulations (including OSHA standards and DOT regulations for commercial vehicles).
  • Process Improvement:Develop and refine standard operating procedures for the shop. As operations expand, streamline processes for work orders, preventative maintenance scheduling, and customer service. Plan for scaling the team and delegate responsibilities to new supervisory staff as appropriate.
  • Additional Duties:Handle or oversee ancillary aspects of shop management such as maintaining facility equipment, scheduling any required inspections (e.g. lift inspections, EPA waste disposal), and coordinating with corporate office or fleet management on strategic initiatives. In the shop’s early stages, the manager may occasionally assist technicians with diagnostics or emergency repairs to keep work on track.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience & Technical Knowledge:2+ years of experience in truck/heavy-duty vehicle maintenance or repair operations. Solid understanding of diesel engines, semi-truck systems, and repair shop workflows. (Hands-on mechanical experience is a strong asset, as this role may involve guiding technicians through complex repairs.)

  • Organizational Skills:Strong organizational and time management abilities. Capable of juggling scheduling, parts inventory, and multiple repair orders simultaneously. Detail-oriented in maintaining records (work orders, invoices, inventory logs) and preparing reports.
  • Customer Service Abilities:Demonstrated customer service skills – able to professionally address customer needs, explain repair issues in layman’s terms, and ensure a positive client experience.
  • Business and Computer Skills:Proficiency with basic business software and shop management systems (for budgeting, tracking work orders, inventory management, etc.).
  • Safety & Compliance Knowledge:Good understanding of workplace safety practices and regulatory requirements. Knowledge of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for commercial trucks and experience ensuring a shop operates in compliance with safety and environmental rules.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior Shop Management:Previous experience as a shop manager or service manager (especially in a heavy-duty truck or fleet maintenance shop) is highly preferred.
  • Vendor & Industry Knowledge:Established relationships with parts suppliers or knowledge of the truck repair market in the Romeoville/Chicago area. Familiarity with inventory management systems and vendor negotiation experience is beneficial.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset:Proven track record of implementing process improvements, such as introducing new repair techniques, software systems, or efficiency measures in a shop setting. Experience growing a team or expanding a shop’s capabilities is a plus.
