Job summary

Valor Metal Works in Olathe, KS is seeking an experienced Shop Foreman to lead the production team. This is a working foreman role where you’ll perform fabrication when needed and supervise daily shop floor activities.

You will organize production, assign work, monitor progress, maintain quality, and uphold safety standards while collaborating with management and the estimating team.

Position Overview

Valor Metal Works is looking for an experienced Shop Foreman to lead our production team and help keep our shop running efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of quality.

This is a working foreman position. The ideal candidate is an experienced metal fabricator who can lead a team, solve problems on the floor, recognize quality issues before they become costly, and step in to perform fabrication work when needed.

The Shop Foreman will work closely with management and the estimating team to organize daily production, assign work, monitor job progress, maintain quality standards, and keep the shop operating safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Shop Operations

• Review the day's workload and production priorities with management and estimators.
• Supervise daily shop floor activities and keep production moving.
• Assign work based on employee skills, workload, and production priorities.
• Monitor job progress and adjust assignments as needed to meet deadlines.
• Assist with walk-in and quick-turn orders when necessary.
• Perform fabrication work when foreman duties do not require attention.

Quality Control

• Routinely inspect work in progress to ensure that Valor Metal Works’ standards of accuracy, quality and workmanship are met.
• Identify and correct mistakes early and prevent unnecessary rework.
• Help employees develop more efficient and effective fabrication techniques.
• Perform a final quality check and sign-off on completed jobs.
• Address quality issues promptly and determine appropriate and effective corrective action.

Production & Scheduling

• Track job progress and identify potential delays before they affect delivery dates or production goals.
• Adjust workflow and priorities as necessary to meet production goals.
• Communicate production issues, material shortages, and delays to management and estimators.
• Help identify ways to improve shop efficiency and reduce rework.

Safety

• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Conduct regular shop safety inspections.
• Identify and correct safety hazards.
• Reinforce company safety procedures and proper equipment use.
• Assist with and conduct employee safety training as needed.
• Respond appropriately to workplace emergencies and equipment-related incidents.

Equipment & Maintenance

• Ensure routine equipment maintenance is completed and documented.
• Work with the designated lead to coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance.
• Monitor the condition of shop equipment and identify maintenance needs before they cause issues in production.
• Ensure equipment is properly maintained and calibrated when applicable.

Inventory & Supplies

• Ensure incoming material is properly identified, color marked, and stored in the correct location.
• Monitor material and supply levels.
• Coordinate with management to order material and supplies as needed.
• Help ensure the shop does not run out of essential supplies such as welding gas, wire, abrasives, and safety equipment.

Documentation

• Ensure completed Job Travelers accurately document all required details
• Maintain accurate production and maintenance records as required.

Training & Development

• Train and mentor employees in fabrication techniques, equipment operation, and safe work practices.
• Help newer employees develop their fabrication skills.
• Identify training needs and communicate them to management.
• Assist with arranging outside training when appropriate.

Customer & Office Support

• Meet with customers when needed to discuss job specifications, progress, changes, or issues.
• Communicate customer concerns or changes to management and estimators.

Leadership

• Set the standard for workmanship, safety, productivity, and professionalism.
• Maintain a positive and productive shop environment.
• Encourage teamwork and cooperation among shop employees.
• Provide constructive feedback and communicate employee performance concerns to management.
• Participate in employee performance reviews with ownership.

Management

• Attend weekly management meetings.
• Communicate shop needs, production concerns, equipment issues, and employee needs to ownership.
• Help develop and implement improvements to shop processes and workflow.

Qualifications & Skills

• 5+ years of metal fabrication experience, with demonstrated proficiency in custom fabrication.
• Strong hands-on experience with MIG/TIG welding, press brakes, shears, saws, grinders, and other fabrication equipment.
• Strong understanding of different metals, material thicknesses, and common fabrication methods.
• Ability to read and understand job specifications, drawings, and measurements.
• Strong attention to detail and a consistent record of quality workmanship.
• Ability to identify problems, troubleshoot issues, and find practical solutions.
• Ability to teach and explain fabrication techniques clearly to other employees.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a team and maintain accountability.
