Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Shop Fitter to join our fabrication team in Chalmette, Louisiana. The ideal candidate will have strong pipe and structural fitting experience and must be able to read prints, lay out material accurately, and prepare fit-ups for welding in accordance with fabrication drawings and project specifications. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a shop production team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lay out, fit, and prepare pipe and structural components for welding according to fabrication drawings and specifications.

• Read and interpret prints, isometrics, and structural details to confirm dimensions, bevels, and joint configurations.

• Measure, cut, bevel, grind, and align material using torches, saws, grinders, and layout tools.

• Verify fit-up tolerances, alignment, and dimensional accuracy before releasing work to welders.

• Coordinate with shop welders, supervisors, and QC personnel to maintain production flow and fabrication schedules.

• Rig and move material safely using hoists, cranes, forklifts, and other shop equipment as qualified.

• Enforce and follow all company and site-specific safety procedures, including PPE, hot work, and rigging requirements.

• Identify drawing discrepancies or material issues and communicate them to shop supervision.

• Support production goals and fabrication deadlines while maintaining quality standards.

• Ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in safe and orderly condition.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of fitting experience in pipe and/or structural fabrication.

• Must be able to read and interpret prints, drawings, and technical documents.

• Experience with layout, fit-up, and dimensional verification in a shop or industrial environment.

• Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card preferred.

• Ability to pass drug and alcohol tests.

• Basic Plus certification preferred; candidates without certification must obtain it within the first week of employment.

• Completion of site safety training within the first week of employment.

• Working knowledge of fabrication methods, hand and power tools, rigging, and shop safety regulations.

• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.

• Ability to work in physically demanding shop conditions, including standing, bending, and lifting.

Preferred Skills

• Experience fabricating spools, supports, platforms, and structural assemblies for industrial projects.

• Familiarity with weld maps, bills of material, and fabrication tracking or reporting.

• Knowledge of quality control inspections, dimensional checks, and safe work planning.

• Ability to work independently and maintain production without compromising safety or quality.
