Job summary

Westlake Chemical in Houston, TX is seeking a Shipping Superintendent to direct regional shipping and distribution operations, ensuring service levels and a focus on operational excellence.

This role leads cross-location teams, drives continuous improvement, and manages KPIs, carrier compliance, and warehouse activities to support production, sales and quality control.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with some post‑secondary education.
  • Minimum of 10 years managerial experience.
  • Experience with distribution and warehousing.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Hands-on experience with departmental metrics, quality, cost and efficiency of shipping operations.
  • Familiarity with MS Excel and MS Office suite.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Four Kites experience desired.
  • Experience working/maintaining WMS system.
  • Ability to travel 15%.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise multiple shipping locations.

  • Lead and motivate staff to perform duties safely and efficiently.
  • Develop and implement best practices across the shipping operation.
  • Drive continuous improvement across locations and meet operational excellence targets.
  • Define KPIs across the network and ensure site accountability.
  • Manage day-to-day shipping operations, measure on-time/OTIF, shipping costs, inventory, productivity and staffing.
  • Perform root cause analysis for transportation, logistics, and warehousing issues and lead corrective actions.
  • Support strategic customer care objectives and develop team capabilities.
  • Ensure all carriers comply with safety and quality standards.
  • Coordinate warehouse activities with production, sales, QC and purchasing.
  • Forecast needed skills/tools/equipment to meet objectives.
  • Maintain a safety-focused mindset and drive zero-incident culture.
  • Develop warehousing strategies for new products and participate in supplier RFPs.

Job description

SUMMARY

The role of the Shipping Superintendent is to direct the company’s regional shipping/distribution operations to ensure that the company’s service levels are met with a continued focus on achieving operational excellence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Directly supervise multiple shipping locations.
  • Carry out supervisor responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, code of conduct and applicable laws.
  • Lead and motivate staff to perform duties in a safe and efficient responsible manner applying rules, regulations and policies with fair and consistent practice.
  • Lead internal efforts in developing implementation of best practices throughout the shipping operation.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts across all locations, with a continued focus on achieving operational excellence across the distribution network.
  • Define KPI’s across the network and hold each site accountable on meeting or exceeding those targets.
  • Manage day‑to‑day shipping operations, measure performance for on‑time, in‑full delivery performance, shipping costs for all forms of transit, warehouse inventory management, warehousing productivity and quality, and workforce planning requirements.
  • Perform root cause analysis for problem reconciliation and lead corrective action for complaints related to transportation, logistics handling and warehousing of finished products.
  • Direct staff to support strategic customer care service objectives, enhance staff, team skills and competencies, and establish team performance objectives.
  • Ensure all carriers comply with legal, quality and safety standards.
  • Confer with department heads to ensure coordination of warehouse activities with activities of other functions such as production, sales, quality control and purchasing.
  • Define and forecast needed skills, tools and equipment to meet project objectives.
  • Carry a safety‑focused mindset. Lead and drive safety initiatives across the network to ensure a zero‑incident safety culture.
  • Develop warehousing strategies for new products, assist Logistics in the preparation of RFPs to evaluate potential suppliers and make appropriate recommendations to senior management.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED required with some post‑secondary education.
  • Minimum of 10 years managerial experience.
  • Experience with distribution and warehousing.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Hands‑on experience with departmental metrics, experience monitoring the quality, quantity, cost and efficiency of shipping operations.
  • Familiarity with MS Excel and MS Office suite.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Four Kites experience desired.
  • Experience working/maintaining WMS system.
  • Ability to travel 15%.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and climb; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; stoop, kneel or crouch occasionally; lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently make minor decisions with limited information, general decisions in the absence of specific directions, and perform activities requiring sustained concentration.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is sometimes moderate in an office; some work may be required in operating units requiring PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. During active remediation additional requirements may include fit testing for respiratory equipment, chemical suits, face shields, etc. May also involve exposure to outside elements and require usage of stairs. Limited travel (up to 15%) may be required.
