Responsibilities

• Verify and keep records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepare items for shipment: compare identifying information and counts, weigh or measure items to verify against records.
• Determine method of shipment, using knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
• Affix shipping labels on packed cartons using UPS.
• Assemble cardboard containers or select preassembled containers.
• Insert items into containers using spacers, fillers, and padding.
• Nail covers on wooden crates and bind containers with tape using a strapping machine.
• Stamp, stencil, or glue identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers.
• Post weights and shipping charges, and affix postage.
• Unpack and examine incoming shipments, reject damaged items, record shortages, and contact shipper to rectify damages.
• Route items to departments.
• Examine outgoing shipments to ensure they meet specifications.
• Maintain inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
• May operate tier-lift truck or hand truck to move shipments to storage or work area.
• May direct others in preparing outgoing and receiving incoming shipments.
• May perform only shipping or receiving activities and be known as Shipping Clerk or Receiving Clerk.
• May be designated according to specialty as Freight Clerk; Reshipping Clerk.
• May receive damaged or defective goods returned to establishment and be designated Returned-Goods Receiving Clerk.
• May receive unsold products returned by DRIVER, SALES ROUTE and be designated Route Returner.
