Job summary

Shultz Steel Company seeks a Shipping‑Receiving Clerk I to perform shipping, receiving, packing, labeling, and documentation with minimal supervision. You will follow procedures to ensure quality and safety while supporting internal and external deliveries and maintaining records.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, package, stage, and ship material following established procedures.
  • Interpret work orders and verify shipping documentation for accuracy.
  • Prepare materials for inspection and shipment; perform basic system transactions.
  • Create shipping documentation and maintain inventory records.
  • Operate a forklift safely and conduct daily vehicle inspections when required.
  • Adhere to quality processes and 6S housekeeping standards.

Job description

Position Summary

Shipping‑Receiving Clerk I associates work with minimal supervision to complete all shipping and receiving tasks. This role follows established procedures to safely receive, package, stage, and ship material while maintaining accurate documentation and inventory records. The position supports internal and external deliveries and ensures adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Obtain job assignments from supervisor or manager.
  • Work safely in accordance with PPE requirements and equipment interaction guidelines.
  • Adhere to quality processes, including in‑process inspection, to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Correctly interpret work orders and verify shipping documentation.
  • Work effectively in a team environment and provide assistance to others as needed.
  • Prepare materials for inspection and shipment.
  • Perform basic system transactions.
  • Complete basic packaging tasks including kitting, labeling, and visual inspection.
  • Create basic shipping documentation.
  • Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Perform daily housekeeping and 6S activities.
  • Maintain a clean driving record.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections when required.
  • Read shipping documents and verify load accuracy.
  • Operate a forklift safely.
  • Safely load and unload material.
  • Perform visual inspections to verify no defects or damage.
  • Establish delivery routes as assigned to meet objectives.
  • Make occasional deliveries outside the local area.
  • Observe all safety policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to the Business Quality Management System (BQMS).
  • Assist with packaging as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Basic English language skills with the ability to read and interpret shipping and work instructions.
  • Forklift certification (internal).
  • Basic knowledge of shipping processes and equipment.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to read and understand shipping documents.
  • Ability to verify quantities and perform visual inspections for defects or damage.
  • Punctuality and reliability.
  • Ability to perform basic shop math, including fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to navigate internal systems to locate process documents.
  • Citizenship or Permanent Residency required due to government military contracts.
  • Fewer than two moving violations in the past five years.
  • No preventable accidents in the past five years.
  • No felony motor vehicle convictions within the past seven years.
  • No DUI/DWI convictions in the past five years.
Experience & Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3–5 years of manufacturing experience, prior military experience, or a technical certification/degree preferred.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
