Job summary

Calhoun County Government seeks a Shift Supervisor for the Youth Center to oversee staff, ensure safety, and manage daily operations. You will supervise Youth Specialists, coordinate medical-related tasks, and maintain shift documentation while ensuring compliance with center policies.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in youth services or related fields, with supervisory experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with two years’ experience with at risk youth or two years supervisory experience.
• Two years of college plus three years of work experience.
• High School Diploma with four years of work experience in a child caring institution.

Responsibilities

• Supervises assigned staff and ensures compliance with Youth Center policies and procedures.
• Coordinates medical tasks including dispensing medication and scheduling medical appointments.
• Oversees safety and security operations for assigned shifts and conducts facility checks.
• Prepares shift summary documentation: shift reports, incident reports, admissions/releases, staff consultations.
• Participates in personnel management: hiring, orientation, training, evaluation, scheduling.
• Performs Youth Specialist duties as needed to maintain safe operations.
• Implements emergency procedures and ensures staff adherence.
• Oversees daily facility programming for consistency and effectiveness.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Youth Center Director, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and staff. Primary duties include staff supervision, reviewing and preparing shift documentation, overseeing daily operations, and ensuring residents receive appropriate medical attention.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervises assigned staff and ensures compliance with all Youth Center policies and procedures.
2. Coordinates a range of medical-related tasks including dispensing medication, scheduling medical appointments, and responding to immediate medical needs.
3. Oversees safety and security operations for assigned shifts, including performing facility checks and scheduled room inspections.
4. Prepares required shift summary documentation including shift reports, incident reports, admissions and releases, and staff disciplinary consultations.
5. Participates in personnel management responsibilities including staff hiring, orientation, training, evaluation, and scheduling.
6. Performs Youth Specialist duties as necessary to maintain safe and effective facility operations.
7. Implements emergency procedures when necessary and ensure staff adherence.
8. Oversees and monitors daily facility programming to ensure consistency and effectiveness.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in human services, behavioral sciences, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, or related field with two years of experience with at risk youth and/or two years of direct supervisory experience or;
  • Two years of college from an accredited college or university and 3 years of work experience or;
  • A high School Diploma and 4 years of work experience in a child caring institution.
• Teaching or facilitation skills in group management and/or recreation are strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff at all levels.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Outlook and Word.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with County personnel, residents, and the general public in situations requiring tact and patience.
• Ability to manage simultaneously, maintain attention.
• to detail with frequent interruptions, and effectively respond to various pressures involving youth, staff, and the public.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Shift Supervisor oversees Youth Specialists assigned to their shift. This includes providing direction, guidance, coaching, and discipline as needed. While the total Youth Specialist workforce may include up to 25-30 staff, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising any staff scheduled during their shift.

Working Conditions

Hybrid Work Classification: On-Site Required
Flexibility Classification: Fixed schedule

• Work is performed in a secure detention facility, requiring adherence to safety protocols and vigilance in maintaining a controlled environment.
• Occasional exposure to infectious diseases, fumes, as well as the possibility of bodily injury during youth restraints or incidents.
• Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day or Saturday/Sunday) are occasionally required.
• Occasional on-call responsibilities required for emergencies, meetings, or urgent operational needs.
• Occasional travel between County locations is required.
• Intermittent or cyclical work pressures are periodically experienced.
• Physical ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, or carry items weighting up to twenty-five pounds.
• Occasionally required to perform tasks involving repetitive movement, bending, stooping, kneeling and/or climbing.
• Frequently required to work in confined areas.
• Frequently required to walk for extended periods of time.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Wage Range

$25.85 - $31.89 USD
