Job description

This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice.

Applicants must be willing to work any shift including evenings and weekends, and any 5 of 7 days. There is a 5% additional pay for evening shift work and a 7.5% additional pay for night shift work.
Examinations:
  1. Performance Exam (Qualifying Only): Will consist of an exercise utilizing an emergency dispatch console monitor. The Human Resources Division may limit the number advancing to the oral exam to approximately the top 30, based on the final results of the performance examination.

  2. Oral Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted to appraise training, experience, interest, and personal fitness for the position.
    Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
    The Human Resources Division may conduct only a performance examination if there are an insufficient number of candidates for an oral exam. If an oral exam is conducted, it will be weighted at 100%.
Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards:
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
  • Experience with a keyboard similar to that on a micro-computer is desirable.
  • Ability to typewrite from clear copy at a rate of not less than 45 net words per minute.
  • Applicants must attach a copy of their keyboard certificate, issued within the last two years, verifying a speed of 45 net words per minute, to their application or it may not be accepted. Certificates must conform to the testing standards adopted by the Civil Service Commission. Visit the Human Resources Division's website for information about obtaining a certificate.

Appointees will be fingerprinted and will be required to pass an extensive background investigation. A medical examination will be conducted to verify the absence of medical conditions that could impair performance.

Note: Candidates employed as Sheriff Dispatch Assistants must complete a one-year probationary period before promotion to Sheriff's Dispatcher I.
