Job summary

Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is seeking a Shelter Veterinary Assistant to support the shelter veterinarian with examinations and treatments of animals. The role includes assisting with spay/neuter surgeries, maintaining the surgery room, and coordinating medical care for injured animals.

You will interact with the public, help with adoptions counseling, and ensure compliance with shelter health standards. Requires a high school diploma and relevant veterinary experience in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of vet assistant experience.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Veterinary Technician Certification preferred.
• CAET Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in examining animals brought to the shelter and ensure proper identification and parasite treatment.
• Assist in kennels, cleaning and disinfecting as needed.
• Detect diseases and ensure hygiene; sterilize equipment and prepare for surgeries.
• Coordinate and assist with surgeries and health checks on specified days.
• Communicate with veterinarians about animal needs and disease recognition.
• Maintain surgery room and instruments; read in-house tests like parvo, leukemia and heartworm.
