Job summary

City of Sacramento’s Animal Care Services shelter seeks a licensed veterinarian to provide medical and surgical care for impounded animals. The role requires overseeing veterinary procedures, supervising staff, and coordinating with public health and animal welfare efforts.

Qualifications

  • DVM degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of recent experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California.
  • Experience supervising staff is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, diagnose, and provide routine and emergency medical treatment for impounded animals.
  • Vaccinate animals against common diseases and perform spay/neutering surgeries prior to adoption.
  • Provide training for staff and supervise personnel assisting with veterinary duties.
  • Develop policies and protocols for the animal health program in the shelter.
  • Oversee daily monitoring of animals and coordinate actions for illness or isolation when needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and maintain records and reports.
