Job summary

City of Midland, Texas seeks an Animal Shelter Assistant to support a Veterinarian in medical care of shelter animals. You will assist with surgeries, monitor health, and perform routine nursing tasks alongside the veterinary team.

Responsibilities include daily health checks, medication administration, shelter upkeep, and maintaining accurate records. This role requires physical stamina and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds in a busy shelter environment.

Responsibilities

• Assists veterinarian with spay/neuter surgeries; sedates and prepares animals for surgery, monitors general health and vital signs during procedures and recuperation.
• Assists veterinarian with and administers prescribed medications, calculates dosages, and monitors pain.
• Prepares for and assists with routine and emergency medical procedures (wounds, blood draws, injections, catheter placement, tests, grooming).
• Performs daily health checks; reviews sick slips and medicates; moves animals as needed.
• Sets up and maintains equipment including monitors, heating pads, autoclave, and surgical instruments; maintains anesthesia equipment.
• Processes animal health information in computer database; documents vaccines and notes; checks microchips.
• Performs routine diagnostic tests (parvo, heartworm, fecal tests, urinalysis, etc.).
• Prepares rabies specimens for health department testing.
• Assists with euthanasia as required.
• Cleans kennels and provides animal care as directed; maintains clinic cleanliness and sterilizes instruments.
• Maintains clinic inventory and assists in ordering supplies and medications.
• Keeps surgery and controlled substance logs; secures controlled drugs.
• Performs computer data entry and record keeping; stays productive during slow times by taking on additional duties.
• Develops and maintains shelter emergency plan.
• All other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager.
