Job summary

Houston Humane Society is seeking a Shelter Porter to maintain sanitation across kennels, cages and facility spaces while working with animals daily to ensure humane care. You will prepare species-appropriate meals, provide fresh water, and manage waste, litter, and bedding.

This role also includes general janitorial duties and assisting staff with animal movement for surgeries. The position requires physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, comfort around animals, and the ability to work in both

Qualifications

• Able to lift animals, equipment, and supplies up to 50 lbs.
• Able to bend to pick up items off the floor
• Willing to pick up feces, clean urine, and other bodily discharge
• Have the ability to work around animals (no allergies) and cleaning chemicals
• Able to clean with hoses, machines, squeegees, towels, rags etc.
• Able to perform duties such as laundry, washing dishes, and litterboxes
• Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments
• Willing to perform any janitorial tasks required to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the facility

Responsibilities

• Clean and disinfect kennels and cages throughout the facility according to current procedures.
• Prepare species-appropriate food in correct proportions and provide fresh water.
• Dispose of leftovers and waste properly.
• Sanitize litter and food pans daily.
• Sweep and clean floors using proper equipment.
• Perform janitorial duties, empty trash, clean bathrooms and break areas.
• Wash and fold towels, blankets, and bedding; store in designated places.
• Maintain cleanliness of buildings inside and outside.
• Notify Facilities/Property Manager of repairs or attention needed.
• Move animals for scheduled surgery.
• Notify staff if animals are distressed, ill, or aggressive.

Job description

A Shelter Porter is responsible for the sanitation and cleanliness of the facility. Additionally, Shelter Porters work with animals every day, and help to ensure that they receive quality and humane care.

Daily Duties and Responsibilities:

• Clean and disinfect kennels and cages throughout the facility at the times, and in the manner required by current cleaning procedures.
• Prepare food appropriate for species, in proportions and at times required according to age and size, and continually provide fresh water.
• Pick up and properly dispose of leftover food and waste.
• Sanitize litter and food pans daily.
• Sweep and clean floors using proper equipment and as required by current cleaning procedures.
• Perform janitorial duties, empty trash, clean bathrooms, employee break areas, administration areas, etc.
• Wash and fold towels, blankets, and other bedding and store in designated places.
• Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the inside and outside of the buildings as required and assigned.
• Notify Facilities/Property Manager of anything needing repair, replacement, or attention.
• Move animals for scheduled surgery.
• Notify the appropriate personnel if:
  • An animal is in distress, appears to be sick or injured, or needs to be seen by a veterinarian.
  • An animal is displaying aggressive behavior towards other animals or humans.
• All other tasks assigned by manager/supervisor that arise during the work day.
