YWCA Dayton is seeking a Shelter Navigator for a 2nd shift (Tue–Sat, 2:30–11 pm) to support survivors of domestic violence and related crises in Dayton. The role involves responding to crisis requests, screening for needs, and linking clients to shelter or community resources.

The position requires a high school diploma (associate degree preferred) and trauma-informed skills; a driver’s license and ability to work independently are essential. Benefits include health coverage and PTO.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Respond to crisis service requests via in-person, phone, and digital channels and provide linkage.
  • Assess shelter clients for eligibility and offer alternatives when needed.
  • Provide shelter support, complete intake paperwork, and supervise shelter operations.
  • Maintain documentation: intake packets, call logs, hotline sheets.
  • Help maintain shelter cleanliness and ensure basic client needs are met.
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources for referrals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

YWCA Dayton, a 24-hour organization dedicated to the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism, seeks an energetic, dedicated person to be an integral part of our team. The Shelter Navigator is responsible for ensuring that survivors of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking and their children have access to crisis hotline and/or shelter on a 24-hour per day basis. This is a full-time varied shift position (2nd shift, Tuesday - Saturday 2:30 - 11 pm), days off will vary, and the role is not a traditional 8-5 administrative position. This person supports the vision, mission, and values of YWCA Dayton.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Respond to crisis service requests including in-person, phone calls, web-based communication and messages made to YWCA 24-hour crisis services and screen all communication for immediate needs and provide supportive listening and service linkage.
  • Assess potential shelter clients for eligibility and provide alternate options for those who cannot be accommodated.
  • Provides support in shelter to ensure 24-hour coverage; including, intake paperwork, general shelter oversight, and other duties as needed.
  • Completes and maintains all relevant documentation including intake packets, call logs, and hotline contact sheets.
  • Assists facilities and operations in maintaining the cleanliness of shelter and the availability of basic needs for clients including hygiene products, cleaning products, laundry detergent, infant care items, etc.
  • Maintain thorough, up-to-date knowledge of community resources and YWCA Dayton service areas to ensure effective referrals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiar with trauma informed care, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution techniques is a must.
  • Active driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Understanding of racial equity and social justice issues and a demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of those we serve.
  • Responsive to the needs and requests of clients, residents, staff and Board of Directors with a willingness to collaborate and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associates Degree in Social Services, Human Services or Mental Health preferred
  • Crisis services experience preferred
ANTICIPATED SALARY AND BENEFITS (FULL TIME ONLY):
  • $16.00 per hour (plus $1.50 per hour rate differential if working 3rd shift)
