Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a part-time shelter associate to support overnight operations at the Odessa shelter. You will handle intake procedures, monitor residents for safety, and maintain accurate records while enforcing house rules.

You will also assist with meal and supply distribution, assign chores, and help maintain a clean, orderly facility. Prior shelter or security experience is preferred and a high school diploma or GED is required.

  • High school diploma or GED required or equivalent experience.
  • One year of security or social services experience in a shelter or similar environment preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Building security: enforce house rules, screen belongings, log incidents, secure areas, and respond calmly to emergencies.
  • Intake/Discharge: perform intake procedures, check sexual offender status, maintain client files, and distribute tickets and items.
  • Housekeeping: assign chores, assist with facility upkeep, inspect for standards, and manage property accountability.

Schedule/Hours: 29 Hours Part timeThis position is responsible for:Assists residents staying in the Corps shelter overnight; performs client intake procedures and prepares client intake records; monitors the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to house rules; maintains accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information; ensures that facility is maintained in a neat and proper order.Key Responsibilities:Building Security Responsibilities (60%)Ensures clients comply with house rules; checks client’s baggage for drugs, alcohol, weapons and pornography; records incidents and notifies supervisor of any special circumstances or unusual problems; ensures security of facility and clients; arms and disarms alarms in accordance with lodge policy; locks and secures area inappropriate for client entry.Responds to emergencies in a calm manner and initiates appropriate actions in accordance with established policies and procedures.Intake and Discharge Responsibilities (20%)Answers telephone and respond to questions regarding the shelter operations.Performs client intake procedures including running sexual offender checks; checks clients into the shelter; prepares and monitors client intake cards; prepares and maintains resident roster.Updates client files as needed; obtains client’s signature on forms as well as house rules and regulations.Prepares and distributes meal and shower tickets, assigns bed numbers; distributes towels, linens and personal hygiene items; secures and distributes client medications as required.Housekeeping and Chore Distribution Responsibilities (20%)Assigns daily cooking, cleaning, and maintenance chores to clients and ensures completion of such; as needed, participates in the cleaning and maintenance of facilities, supplies, and equipment; inspects facility on a routine basis to ensure compliance with established standards; ensures return and accountability of The Salvation Army property (linens, etc.).Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Knowledge of effective and efficient methods for organizing and maintaining records and ability to perform the same.Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.Knowledge of basic record keeping practices and procedures.Ability to communicate effectively with clients to control, lead, and motivate behavior.Ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of people and remain sensitive to their concerns.Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures.Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation ArmyEmployee Benefits: Employee Benefits:Part-Time:Paid Time OffAflac Dental & Vision InsuranceVoluntary Life InsuranceHigh school diploma or G.E.D.,One-year prior experience performing security or social services work in a shelter or similar environment preferred,orany equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Equal Opportunity Employer: Veterans | Disabled
