Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Maintenance Custodian to perform building maintenance at family shelters under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor. The role requires painting, carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills and a basic understanding of mechanical systems to support safe, clean and well-maintained facilities.

You will rotate among shelters, complete work orders promptly, help clean vacant units within a 4-hour DHS deadline, and assist in ground cleanup, snow removal and driving

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Experience with disadvantaged populations is a plus.
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work an 8-hour shift primarily standing.
• Ability to follow instructions and use basic cleaning equipment.
• Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting; understanding of mechanical systems.
• Valid NYS Driver's License required.
• Willingness to certify as Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.

Responsibilities

• Report to Maintenance Supervisor on building maintenance and safety needs.
• Rotate among shelters to perform repairs (painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, landscaping).
• Promptly complete all work orders.
• Maintain tools, supplies and equipment in good condition.
• Assist with ground cleanup and snow removal as assigned.
• Keep workspace safe and sanitary and follow OSHA regulations.
• Occasionally drive agency vehicles and log mileage.
• Clean and sanitize vacant units within the DHS 4-hour post-discharge window.
• Keep public areas and workspaces clean as assigned.
• Empty trash from the compactor and maintain floors.
• Assist moving furniture for clients as needed.
• Weekend shifts may be required.
• May be assigned to other Salvation Army shelters as needed.
