Job summary

The University of Michigan is seeking skilled trades personnel in Ann Arbor to design, lay out, fabricate, install and repair sheet metal structures.

This full-time, onsite position in the Fabrication Shops requires reading blueprints, operating hand and power tools, and adhering to safety standards; union environment; overtime possible.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; specialized training in sheet metal forming is preferred.
• Considerable experience via apprenticeship or trade school.
• Experience in lay out, forming and fabrication of sheet metal structures.
• Able to read blueprints and interpret diagrams.
• Ability to operate power equipment safely.

Responsibilities

• Select material gauge and type for each structure.
• Design and lay out fabrication plans.
• Cut and form fiberglass and sheet metal with various tools.
• Assemble, install and repair structures including ducts and cabinets.
• Maintain and clean equipment and workspace.
• Read and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
• Insulate internal duct work.
• Prepare service records and time expended.

Job Summary

To design, lay out, form, fabricate, install and repair sheet metal, fiberglass or other synthetic structures or devices

Responsibilities*

• Select gauge and type of material appropriate for the structure involved.
• Design and lay out the structure to be fabricated.
• Cut and form fiberglass or other synthetic materials and various types of sheet metal, including non-ferrous, iron and steel, using tin snips, hammer and hand or power driven shearing,rolling, bending, breaking, drilling, forming machines and spot welders.
• Assemble, install and repair structures, including ducts, machine guards, roof gutters, flashing, tanks, cabinets, boxes, blowers, ventilators, air washers, air conditioners, drain pipes,hoppers, filter housing, roof vents, sinks, troughs and lab hoods, using soldering and riveting equipment, portable power drills, power grinders and buffers, files, hoists, scaffolds, and fabricated hangers.
• Maintain and clean equipment and working area.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams sketches and job specifications.
• Insulate internal duct work.
• Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.

Required Qualifications*

• Graduation from high school or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is necessary - preferably supplemented by specialized training in the forming and fabrication of sheet metal devices.
• Considerable experience through an apprenticeship, trade school, or community college.
• Reasonable experience in the lay out, forming and fabrication of sheet metal structures.
• Reasonable knowledge of mathematics, including geometry and algebra.
• Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in sheet metal work.
• Reasonable manual strength and dexterity.
• Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.
• Ability to observe safety precautions in the operation of power equipment.
• Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams
• Ability to use electronic devices, such as tablets to enter and view information.
• Must possess the necessary requirements to operate a University vehicle.

Desired Qualifications*

Certifications or experience in sheet metal fabrication or similar fabrication trade.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .

Work Schedule

The primary hours of this position will be: Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm. However, this position may be asked to work overtime as needed.
