Job summary

Green Century Capital Management, the investment advisor to the Green Century Funds, seeks a Shareholder Advocate to advance environmental practices at major corporations. You will develop strategies, target campaigns, and liaise with corporate representatives and coalitions to drive real change.

You will research policies, draft resolutions, and attend meetings, reporting to the Director of Shareholder Advocacy.

Qualifications

Job description

Green Century Capital Management (Green Century) is the investment advisor of the Green Century Funds, one of the first families of environmentally responsible and fossil fuel free mutual funds in the United States. We are seeking to add a talented person to our award-winning shareholder advocacy team to expand Green Century’s efforts to improve corporate environmental practices.

Green Century’s Shareholder Advocate will bring critical environmental concerns to America’s largest corporations and help develop strategies to ensure they improve their policies. The Advocate will bring pressure to bear on targeted corporations on Green Century’s issues and campaigns, and will collaborate closely with our other shareholder advocates. This position reports to the Director of Shareholder Advocacy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development, strategy and implementation of our annual advocacy plan as well as actions targeting specific environmental issues and companies.
  • Research corporate environmental policies and best practices around issues of concern. Identify opportunities for change and develop the business case for companies to take responsible environmental action.
  • Communicate and negotiate with corporate representatives through written correspondence, video, and in-person meetings.
  • Draft and file shareholder resolutions.
  • Attend corporate annual general meetings.
  • Vote the proxies for companies owned by Green Century and the Funds.
  • Engage with and represent Green Century in select shareholder coalition efforts.
  • Communicate with non-profit organizations to develop and coordinate actions.
  • Write and distribute press releases and speak with members of the press.
  • Support the broader mission of Green Century and our non-profit owners, as needed.

This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in matters of significance and working effectively in both corporate and non-profit settings.

Qualifications

We seek applicants who possess a strong commitment to environmental issues and environmentally responsible businesses. The successful candidate will also bring the following skills and attributes to the position: strong verbal, writing, interpersonal, strategic, and analytical skills; proven ability to juggle multiple projects; energy and commitment to environmentally responsible investing; a team orientation that balances individual contribution and group effort; a fearless approach to engaging with the media; and an ability to bring integrity and collegiality to our corporate dialogues. Ability to travel periodically, a college degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience is required.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting target annual compensation range for someone with 2-5 years of relevant professional experience is $40,000-$46,000 in their first year. Candidates on the lower end of directly relevant experience should expect to be on the lower end of this range; candidates on the higher end of relevant experience are likely to be on the higher end of this range.
