Job summary

Harlem United Community AIDS Center seeks a Sexual Health Counselor to run community-based testing programs in NYC, performing rapid HIV/HCV testing, STI screenings, and providing sex-positive, trauma-informed counseling to clients.

The role includes phlebotomy, data entry in eSHARE/AIRS/eIcare, and outreach across East/Central Harlem and the Bronx, with occasional evenings and weekends. A NYS driver’s license and experience serving affected communities are required.

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy certification required.
• Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of related work experience; a high school diploma or GED with 2–3 years’ experience in HIV testing programs may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
• Experience working with communities served by this program, including people who use drugs, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people experiencing homelessness, migrant communities, and those with experience in the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities

• Conduct rapid HIV/HCV testing and STI screenings on-site at Harlem United locations, community settings, and mobile units.
• Provide sex-positive counseling with a trauma-informed, harm-reduction approach and discuss prevention and care options.
• Collect specimens for HIV, HCV, and STI testing, perform phlebotomy, and ensure proper lab processing.
• Coordinate linkage to medical care, HIV prevention services, and benefits enrollment as needed.
• Maintain accurate documentation in data systems (eSHARE, AIRS, eIcare).
• Be available for occasional evenings and weekends for events.
