Job summary

The New School’s Parsons School of Design invites applications for the Assistant Manager of Mechanics, Sewing & Soft Construction in the Making Center. This role oversees the sewing facilities and equipment, ensuring a safe, productive environment for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students and faculty.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager of Sewing and Soft Construction, this exempt administrative position is based on campus, with a three-year fixed term and opportunities to

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and/or 3 years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of industrial sewing and soft construction techniques, finishing, and troubleshooting.
• Technical knowledge of sewing machinery and repair knowledge.
• Experience with repair and maintenance of equipment.
• Ability to identify machine issues and perform repairs for 400+ machines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a clean, safe working environment and uphold shop culture.
• Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, install sewing equipment for continuous operation.
• Develop SOPs and preventive maintenance schedules.
• Lead staff training on equipment maintenance and safety.
• Create and conduct orientations, trainings, and tours.
• Oversee scheduling, inventories, and metrics tracking.
• Supervise student workers and assign shifts.
• Oversee tool checkout and lab use.
• Create technical documentation and signage for labs.
