Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection seeks a Sewage Planning Specialist Trainee to learn how environmental programs are planned and administered. You will train with experienced staff and gain confidence through real field and office work, while protecting communities and natural resources.

Responsibilities include plan review, municipal coordination, program oversight, field investigations, compliance actions, and data management.

Qualifications

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Responsibilities

  • Plan Review: Evaluate sewage facility plans and updates for regulatory and natural resource protections.
  • Municipal Coordination: Meet with local officials to discuss requirements, timelines, and planning content.
  • Program Oversight: Monitor local agency administration of on-lot sewage programs and suggest improvements.
  • Field Investigation: Conduct surveys and inspections to document sewage needs and actions.
  • Compliance Actions: Initiate enforcement steps when violations occur.
  • Data Management: Enter information into electronic systems and review permit applications.
