Cirrus is seeking a Setup Machinist for the 2nd shift in Grand Forks, ND. You will load materials, set up CNC machines (mills and lathes), and prepare programs for production while ensuring dimensions and tolerances meet specifications.

You will read blueprints, verify first-part conformance, and apply GD&T principles to produce high-quality parts. This role emphasizes precision, safety, and independent work within established procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2-year Machinist vocational program and 2-4 years relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read drawings and GD&T; strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with CNC machines (mills, lathes) and setup.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machines (mills, lathes) to ensure safe, efficient production.
  • Load material and adjust cutting tools/offsets as required.
  • Determine if programs need updating or modification and provide feedback to the team.
  • Deburr parts to drawing requirements with high precision.
  • Check and fill machine fluid levels; monitor equipment for maintenance needs.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications; guide activities for quality.
  • Perform inspections and document deviations from engineering drawings.
  • Follow work instructions to complete tasks and keep production records.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work environment and follow safety standards.

Overview

Setup Machinists prepare and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments out of metal. Setup Machinists will load materials, tools, and programs into CNC machine equipment to prepare for production. Responsible for measuring dimensions of first-part completed to verify conformance to specifications. Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to determine the precise specifications, dimensions, and tolerance levels of the finished product. Applies knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures to produce high-quality parts. A Setup Machinist works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function and has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.


Responsibilities


  • Set-up and opertes CNC machines (mills, lathes, etc.) to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate production.

  • Load material during operation and change or adjust cutting tools and offsets when required

  • Determine if programs need to be updated or modified to meet current conditions and provide feedback to appropriate team members

  • Deburr product to drawing requirements using hand and power tools with high precision

  • Check and fill machine fluid levels, manages chips and monitors equipment for maintenance requirements

  • Read, undersstand and interpret engineering drawings and specificiations to guide activities and ensure quality

  • Understand inspections of work completed, perform inspections and document deviations from engineering drawing

  • Follow verbal, written, and electronic work instruction to complete tasks

  • Keep daily production records and record pertinent manufacturing data where required

  • Learn, practice and follow all safety standards and policies and ensure a safe operating environment, including use of appropriate protective equipment and identification of ptoential safety concerns

  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment


Qualifications


  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • 2 year degree from a Machinist vocational program required and 2-4 years relevant experience required Or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgement and effective communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Ability to effectively manage stress, including competing work demands and multiple projects at the same time

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to read drawings and technical specifications including global dimensioning and tolerancing (GD+T)

  • Experience with a variety of CNC machines (mills, lathes, etc.)

  • Knowledge of different materials and cutting tools

  • Demonstrated proficiency on basic machine set-up and operations
