Job Description

Golden State Peterbilt, located at 1450 S Union Ave, a subsidiary of E.M. Tharp Inc., is currently seeking Journey Level 5 Service Technicians for their Bakersfield location to join our growing team! This position is essential to the Service Department, performing expert-level diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on PACCAR MX and Cummins diesel engines, encompassing a wide range of systems and components. Utilize advanced troubleshooting techniques to identify and address complex mechanical, electrical, and performance-related issues, and perform major engine overhauls, including disassembly, inspection, and reassembly, ensuring adherence to manufacturer specifications and quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Extensive knowledge of heavy truck systems and components, including engines, drivetrains, and emissions systems.
  • Perform major engine overhauls, including disassembly, inspection, and reassembly, ensuring adherence to manufacturer specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform in-depth performance evaluations and efficiency optimizations to enhance engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions compliance.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technical advancements, service procedures, and diagnostic software for both PACCAR MX and Cummins engines.
  • Collaborate with foremen and parts department to coordinate repairs and order necessary components.

Qualifications and Skills

To effectively perform the duties of a Service Technician Level 5, individuals must demonstrate competencies such as:

  • Extensive knowledge of PACCAR MX and Cummins diesel engine systems, including fuel injection, emissions control, turbocharging, cooling, and lubrication systems.
  • Proficiency with specialized diagnostic tools, software, and instrumentation specific to both engine brands for accurate diagnosis and calibration.
  • Expertise in interpreting technical documentation, including service manuals, wiring diagrams, and engineering specifications.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship abilities to supervise junior technicians, lead engine overhaul projects, and collaborate with other departments.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for complex mechanical, electrical, and performance issues.
  • Perform major engine overhauls, ensuring compliance with manufacturer standards.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Stay updated with technological advancements and diagnostic tools for PACCAR MX and Cummins engines.
  • Excellent communication skills for liaising with customers, service advisors, and OEM representatives.
  • Dependability, ability to follow instructions, respond to management feedback, and improve performance.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills to document technician notes and communicate with supervisors.
  • Leadership qualities to advise and mentor junior technicians.
  • Commitment to safety protocols and regulations for commercial vehicle maintenance.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.

Education and Experience:

A combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Typically, this includes a minimum of five years of responsible technician work in heavy/medium-duty applications.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license; Class A preferred.
  • Completion of a diesel technology program or apprenticeship is advantageous.
  • Completion of specialized training programs or certifications from PACCAR and Cummins.
  • Hands-on experience with PACCAR MX and Cummins engines in dealership, fleet maintenance, or repair facilities.
  • Participation in ongoing professional development activities.

Work Environment:

The physical demands include standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and occasionally sitting. Must regularly lift/move up to 60 pounds. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet/humid conditions, extreme heat, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions. Noise levels are loud. Proper safety gear is mandatory. A standard 40-hour work week applies.
