Job summary

Magna Water District seeks a Service Maintenance Worker for Wastewater Collections. You will construct, maintain, repair, and install wastewater system components, following EPA/industry standards to keep the system running 24/7, including pumps, conveyors, blowers and vacuum equipment.

Service orders must be processed within 24 hours. Responsibilities include operating heavy machinery, diagnosing lines with video gear, and ensuring safety and customer service in a team or solo setting.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED completed.
  • Technical training in inspection or construction management preferred.
  • Wastewater sampling and testing experience preferred.
  • One year of water utility service maintenance experience preferred.
  • Valid Utah Class D driver's license; CDL Class A tanker endorsement preferred or obtainable within 90 days.
  • Water and wastewater operator certifications within listed timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Operate instrumentation and computer software (MS Office) for daily tasks.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, dump trucks, and excavators.
  • Monitor wastewater lines using video/TV equipment for diagnostics.
  • Use high‑pressure vacuum equipment and other pumps and conveyors.
  • Maintain and repair wastewater collection components; install where required.
  • Process incoming service orders within 24 hours.
  • Collaborate with team or work independently; maintain safety and customer service standards.

Title: Service Maintenance Wastewater Collections

Reports to: Wastewater Collections Crew Lead

Group/Department: Wastewater Operations

Labor Category: Union, Non-exempt

Wage: $22.953 - 31.879 per hour

Job Summary:

Works on wastewater collections construction and where required will maintain, repair, and install wastewater system components. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures set forth by the EPA/ Collection Systems industry standards in maintaining and operating wastewater collection system. Ensures that the wastewater /collections system is operational 24/7 which includes maintenance of pumps, conveyors, blowers, vacuum equipment, and other wastewater collection equipment are functioning properly. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures. Process incoming service orders within a 24-hour time period.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Advanced knowledge and use of instrumentation equipment and computer software such as MS Office Programs.
  • Ability to operate large machinery, backhoe, dump truck and excavator.
  • Ability to operate video and television monitoring equipment to perform diagnostics on wastewater lines.
  • Ability to use a high‑pressure vacuum cleaner.
  • Heavy pipe construction equipment operation experience.
  • Multi‑task oriented and ability to set priorities.
  • Well organized, accurate, and attentive to detail.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or individually.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor when answering customer inquiries.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift, on average, 30‑50 lbs. daily.

General Qualification Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Prior Work Experience:
  • Graduation from High School or G.E.D; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Wastewater sampling and testing experience preferred
  • One year of water utility service maintenance experience or in a related field preferred.
  • Heavy pipe construction equipment operation experience preferred.
Education and Training:

Technical training in inspection, construction management or equivalent preferred. High School Diploma required.

Licenses, Certifications, Etc.:
  • Valid Utah Class D driver's license.
  • Commercial Driver's License Class A tanker endorsement preferred, or to obtain the C.D.L within 90 days
  • Water Operator Certification Grade I within one year.
  • Wastewater Operator Certification Grade I within one year.
  • Wastewater Operator Certification Grade II within two years.
  • Wastewater Operator Certification Grade III within four years.
  • Wastewater Operator Certification Grade IV within six years.
Background Knowledge:
  1. Requires a working knowledge of the District's products and services; knowledge of short-range technical plans; basic knowledge of overall strategic long-range plans.
Performance Expectations:
  1. Must have the ability to plan, coordinate and implement the policies and procedures for the water division.
  2. Must be able to make decisions of a significant nature impacting the water production and distribution maintenance and be able to meet the customer service responsibilities for this position.
  3. Must demonstrate safety leadership by promoting and facilitating the safety of co-workers and the general public.
  4. Must perform all job tasks in compliance with MWD safety policies and procedures.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be able to rely on policy, written guidance or internal discussions to resolve problems.
  • Must have verbal skills to communicate effectively with employees and external business contacts. Microsoft Word, Excel, and GIS experience preferred.
  • Must have advanced skills with construction practices; advanced knowledge of utility locating equipment, blueprint reading, and redlining. Knowledge of GPS equipment, computers and other computer software preferred.

Overall Effort and Work Location:
  1. Must be able to withstand daily mental strain and pressure. Must be flexible to adjust for constantly changing operations.
  2. Work is generally performed during normal business hours. Must be able to work a predictable and consistent schedule with an occasional after‑hours work may be required as determined by the changing circumstances. Must be on‑call 24/7 to respond to District issues or emergencies. Occasional travel required both within and outside of the state to attend meetings or obtain training.
