Job summary

State of Washington's Department of Ecology seeks a SEPA and Environmental Regulation Specialist (Environmental Specialist 3) for the Nuclear Waste Program in Richland, WA. The role leads reviews under SEPA, NEPA, MTCA, and related regulations, coordinating with engineers, scientists, and legal staff to ensure compliance and protective environmental decisions.

Onboarding requires in-office work five days weekly at first, with potential for primarily telework after probation, pending supervisor

Qualifications

  • Six (6) years of experience and/or education related to the duties of the position with listed competencies.
  • Ability to apply environmental policy frameworks (SEPA/NEPA) to evaluate proposals and guide staff and agencies.
  • Ability to interpret complex environmental regulations to ensure compliance and defensible decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate SEPA, NEPA, MTCA, and related notifications to identify issues and ensure compliance.
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate SEPA documentation and related technical materials.
  • Manage and file documents in established databases and record-keeping systems.
  • Provide technical and programmatic support for environmental planning and compliance activities.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, scientists, and staff to collect data and clarify regulatory requirements.
  • Apply strong communication, organizational, analytical, and project management skills across multiple projects.
  • Track project schedules, milestones, and deliverables to ensure timely completion.
