Job description

We are seeking a Sensor System Engineer to join the Machine Vision Systems team at Amazon Robotics. This is a cross-disciplinary Subject Matter Expert (SME) role that bridges the gap between customers, product strategy, and deep technical execution. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of systems engineering, product management, and customer engagement, translating real-world needs into actionable sensor solutions for next-generation robotic platforms.

Key job responsibilities
  • Customer Engagement & Requirements Gathering: Serve as a primary technical point of contact for internal and external customers. Conduct discovery sessions, gather use‑case requirements, and translate customer needs into quantifiable technical specifications and design goals.
  • Product Definition & Roadmap Support: Partner with product management to define product requirements, prioritize features, and shape the sensor product roadmap based on customer feedback, market trends, and technical feasibility.
  • System Architecture: Contribute to sensor system architecture selections, ensuring designs meet performance, cost, reliability, and integration requirements across mechanical, electrical, and optical domains.
  • Technology Benchmarking & Competitive Analysis: Evaluate emerging sensing technologies, benchmark against competitive solutions, and identify opportunities to differentiate. Maintain awareness of industry trends, academic research, and market dynamics in robotics sensing (navigation, perception, manipulation).
  • Technical Challenge Identification: Proactively identify and communicate technical risks and enablement problems for customer applications. Develop mitigation strategies and trade‑off assessments to guide engineering selections.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Work across hardware, firmware, optical, mechanical, electrical, test, and manufacturing teams to ensure cohesive system‑level solutions. Communicate effectively across disciplines to align stakeholders on requirements and priorities.
A day in the life

Mornings typically begin with cross‑functional standups alongside optical, electrical, and mechanical teams to align on sensor development priorities. Mid‑morning involves customer calls — gathering requirements, clarifying use cases, and presenting technical trade‑offs. Afternoons shift between benchmarking vying sensor technologies, updating product requirement documents, and collaborating with product managers on roadmap selections. Time is also spent examining market trends, reviewing architecture proposals, and documenting technical challenges that impact customer enablement. The role requires constant context‑switching between deep technical analysis and stakeholder communication, ensuring customer needs continuously inform engineering direction.
