Albemarle County Community Development Department is seeking a Senior Planner I to oversee zoning reviews, interpretations, and coordination with other agencies. The role requires a Master’s in planning and 2 years of related experience, with a focus on compliance and clear communication.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in planning or related field.
• Two years of professional planning experience including site development plans and subdivision plats.
• Experience interpreting and understanding state and local codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Reviewing zoning applications for compliance with zoning requirements.
• Reviewing property records, approved plans, proffers, maps, plats and drawings to evaluate applications.
• Determining applicable zoning districts, uses, setbacks, building height, parking, landscaping and other standards.
• Communicating required corrections to applicants and professionals clearly.
• Reviewing subdivision plats and site plans for compliance with zoning and subdivision requirements.
• Coordinating reviews with other staff and agencies such as VDH and VDOT.
• Responding to questions about zoning requirements and development rights.
• Documenting review findings and maintaining accurate records in the permitting system.
• Assisting with zoning-related policy and ordinance updates, including Zoning Modernization.
• Performing related work consistent with Senior Planner I.
