Job summary

Interstate Engineering, Inc. seeks a Senior Water & Wastewater Engineer to lead municipal infrastructure projects and serve as the firm’s Water & Wastewater Technical Group Leader.

This role blends project delivery, technical leadership, staff development, and ongoing improvement to advance our water and wastewater practice across offices. Located in any Interstate Engineering office, this position requires a PE license, 10+ years of water and wastewater experience, and proven ability to mentor

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 10+ years in water and wastewater engineering.
  • Experience leading municipal infrastructure projects from planning through construction.
  • Strong communication, mentoring, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop teams and drive technical excellence.

Job Description & Requirements

Interstate Engineering is seeking an experienced Senior Water & Wastewater Engineer to lead complex municipal infrastructure projects while serving as the firm's Water & Wastewater Technical Group Leader. This role combines project delivery, technical leadership, staff development, and continuous improvement to advance our water and wastewater practice across all offices. The position serves as a firmwide subject matter expert and plays a key role in establishing standards, mentoring staff, and promoting technical excellence. This employee can be located in any Interstate Engineering office location.

What You'll Do
Technical Leadership (Regional)

Lead planning, design, and construction support for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

Serve as a technical resource for project teams across the region.

Review plans, specifications, reports, calculations, and technical deliverables.

Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget, and risk management.

Technical Group Leadership (Companywide)

Lead the Water & Wastewater Technical Group and facilitate collaboration across regions.

Serve as a technical resource for project teams across the company.

Develop and maintain company standards, specifications, templates, and best practices.

Identify opportunities to improve technical quality, efficiency, and consistency.

Participate in monthly Technical Group Leader meetings and company improvement initiatives.

Staff Development

Mentor engineers, designers, and technicians.

Support hiring, onboarding, and workforce development efforts.

Coordinate training, conferences, certifications, and knowledge-sharing activities.

Help build the next generation of technical leaders within the firm.

Lead lessons learned and technical improvement efforts.

Improve workflows, QA/QC processes, tools, and technical resources.

Collaborate with other technical groups to strengthen multidisciplinary project delivery.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.

Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

10+ years of experience in water and wastewater engineering.

Experience leading municipal infrastructure projects from planning through construction; where applicable operations of multidisciplinary systems (Mechanical, Electrical & SCADA)

Strong communication, mentoring, and leadership skills.

Demonstrated ability to develop teams and drive technical excellence.

Preferred Experience

Water treatment and distribution systems

Wastewater treatment and collection systems

Utility master planning

Hydraulic modeling

Regulatory compliance and permitting

SRF funding programs

AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, and related engineering tools
