Job summary

Mead & Hunt, Inc. is seeking a senior structural engineer to lead hydraulic structures and manage projects within the dams, hydropower, and water resources team.

The role emphasizes technical leadership, review, and field oversight in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment. The candidate should have a PE license, a CA‑target within 12 months, and at least 8 years of structural engineering experience, with strong writing and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering (ABET-accredited).
• 8+ years of structural engineering experience.
• PE license in any state with ability to obtain CA license within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of hydraulic structures and related projects (dams, spillways, canals, pump stations, valve houses).
• Serve as project manager responsible for scope, schedule and budget.
• Oversee preparation of plans, calculations, specs for bidding and construction.
• Review, approve, and apply professional seals to final plans, specs, and reports.
• Perform condition assessments of existing structures.
• Evaluate and analyze existing structures.
• Conduct field inspections to assess conditions.
• Support construction administration during construction.
• Mentor and guide junior team members; provide QA/QC.
• Manage client relationships and attend meetings as needed.
• Conduct travel as required.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading the design of hydraulic structures and other structural engineering projects, including projects related to dams, spillways, canals, pump stations, valve houses, and other hydraulic structures.
• Serving as a project manager responsible for scope, schedule and budget.
• Overseeing the preparation of plans, calculations, specifications, and other design documents for bidding and construction.
• Serving as an engineer in responsible charge of reviewing, approving, and applying professional engineering seals to final plans, specifications, and reports.
• Performing condition assessments of existing structures.
• Evaluating and analyzing existing structures.
• Conducting field inspections of project sites to assess existing conditions.
• Supporting construction administration for projects in construction.
• Mentoring and providing guidance to less experienced team members.
• Providing QA/QC.
• Client management.
• Attending day and night client meetings as necessary.
• Conducting necessary travel.

The successful candidate must have:

• A bachelor's degree (or higher) in civil or structural engineering, or architectural engineering (with an emphasis on structures) from an ABET accredited college or university
• At least eight (8) years of relevant structural engineering work experience
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in any state with the ability to obtain a license in California within twelve (12) months of being hired.

The ideal candidate will have any/all of the following:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary project team setting to deliver construction documents and reports.
• Experience designing and analyzing hydraulic structures and other water-related structural projects.
• Strong technical writing skills and experience writing reports, specifications, and technical memorandums.
• Both client and project management experience.
• Experience preparing proposals by developing scopes of work, cost estimates, and project schedules.
• Knowledge of California Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 350, and AISC 360.
• Experience with Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Manuals related to hydraulic structures and FERC Engineering Guidelines.
• Experience with seismic evaluations and earthquake resistant designs.
• Experience with structural engineering software programs including finite element analysis and CAD programs such as RISA 3D, SAP2000, and AutoCAD.
• Mentoring experience.
• A Structural Engineer (SE) license.

Salary Range: $120,000 to $166,000 - Actual compensation may vary due to other factors such as: experience, skill set or location.
