Job summary

HDR's Madison office seeks a Wastewater Professional Engineer to lead design and project delivery for municipal and industrial wastewater projects. You will collaborate across disciplines to ensure technically sound solutions and regulatory compliance while advancing HDR’s client-focused mission.

With a strong background in planning, design, and analysis, you will mentor junior engineers and contribute to a wide range of projects across Wisconsin and the Midwest.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years experience with municipal wastewater treatment/design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate wastewater design team through schematic design and contract documents.
  • Establish meetings with governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Coordinate workload to meet project schedule.
  • Conduct site work sessions with Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Review process mechanical documents for conflicts across disciplines.
  • Write and edit process mechanical specifications and select equipment.
  • Coordinate with disciplines to incorporate changes into documents.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Conduct QA/QC on team outputs.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Our Madison team is growing its client base and expanding its impact across Wisconsin, the Midwest, and beyond. As a Professional Engineer, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals on a diverse range of municipal and private‑sector projects, supporting clients such as local governments, utilities, food and beverage manufacturers, and industrial facilities. In the role of Wastewater Professional Engineer, we'll count on you to:
  • Coordinate the work of the wastewater design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Coordinate workload to complete the document on schedule
  • Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines
  • Review process mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines
  • Write and edit process mechanical specifications, select equipment, treatment systems, and devices
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed‑upon changes into the project documents
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Wastewater Process Mechanical Project Engineers, Project Coordinators or CAD Technicians as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or related Engineering field

10+ years of experience with municipal or industrial wastewater treatment and treatment process design

Experience working on municipal wastewater projects

Experience working on food and beverage, manufacturing, life sciences, semiconductor, data center, or other industrial wastewater projects

Experience working on large multidisciplinary wastewater projects

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent field
  • A minimum of 10 years experience with Municipal Water and Wastewater Systems Planning and Design

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

  • Strong technical background and experience in designing water distribution systems
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MicroStation and hydraulic modeling software
  • Project Engineering and Project Management experience is necessary
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must
